F1: Bottas admits Williams form frustrating

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 03 April 2013 | 11.06

By Edd Straw and Sam Tremayne Tuesday, April 2nd 2013, 15:50 GMT

Valtteri Bottas Williams F1 2013Valtteri Bottas admits both he and Williams are frustrated by the team's poor form in the 2013 Formula 1 world championship so far.

The Grove-based squad approached the season certain it had taken a step forward compared to 2012, during which its car proved fast enough to win in Spain.

But neither Bottas nor Pastor Maldonado managed to break into Q3 or the points in the Australian or Malaysian Grands Prix.

Maldonado has retired twice, with Bottas's 11th place at Sepang remains the team's best result.

Bottas admits that he was expecting to challenge for stronger results.

"Of course I was hoping to fight for better positions," he said when asked by AUTOSPORT if he was frustrated.

"The goal is to get higher and be consistently in the points.

"It's what the team was hoping for and what I'm hoping for so of course it's a bit disappointing.

"It is how it is now, we just need to get back there.

"We're understanding more all the time. We need more time but we will get there."

Bottas insists he is convinced of the potential of the Williams FW35 despite the lacklustre start to the campaign.

Valtteri Bottas Williams F1 2013The team recently said it suspected the exhaust area was the biggest weakness of the car.

"It's a different car, [and] some things were better in the [2012] car," Bottas said.

"We have more potential to do better in this car though. It's not easy but we're learning more and more.

"The goal for this year is to improve the position from last year so we need to get working."

INDY: Daly lands Indy 500 ride with AJ Foyt

By Sam Tremayne Tuesday, April 2nd 2013, 16:02 GMT

Conor Daly IndyCarConor Daly will compete in this year's Indianapolis 500 after securing a deal with AJ Foyt Racing.

The 21-year-old had his first taste of IndyCar when he tested for the team at Sebring at the end of last year, after which he set his sights on securing a drive in the United States.

Daly, the son of six-time Indy 500 starter Derek Daly, has spent the past two seasons racing in GP3 and will partner regular Foyt driver Takuma Sato in the May event.

"I almost can't describe what it means to have the opportunity to race in the Indianapolis 500," said Daly.

"I am so thankful that A.J. and [team director] Larry [Foyt] have given me my first shot at the greatest race in the world.

"I know this will sound cheesy but I've never been happier in my life, this race means so much to me."

Foyt, a four-time Indy 500 champion, said Daly's pace and technical feedback during his test had convinced the team to give him a seat.

"He ran well at Sebring when we needed someone to do some testing in the off season," said Foyt.

"He was fast, smooth, and didn't get in trouble. When we made a change on the car he felt it.

"I found him to be very savvy on the chassis setups.

Conor Daly IndyCar"In fact, when we made a minor change which was really nothing, he thought about it and said it felt no different.

"I told him that was the right answer because we didn't do anything he'd be able to feel, so that impressed me, too.

"I've run a lot of rookies at Indy and I think Conor will do a good job for us."

Daly is the fourth driver scheduled to participate in the Rookie Orientation Program at Indianapolis on April 11.

AJ Allmendinger, Tristan Vautier and Carlos Munoz are also scheduled to test.

The trio recently ran at Texas as early preparation.

GP3: GP3 adds Valencia to 2013 calendar

By Pablo Elizalde Tuesday, April 2nd 2013, 18:13 GMT

GP3 adds Valencia to 2013 calendarThe GP3 series will race in Valencia again this year after organisers confirmed the Ricardo Tormo circuit has been added to the 2013 schedule.

Valencia's will be a standalone event in the eight-race season, with the series following the Formula 1 calendar for the other seven rounds.

The Valencia race will take place on June 15-16.

The schedule for the race weekend includes a practice session on Saturday, with qualifying later on the same day. The two races will take place on Sunday.

Valencia hosted a round of the GP3 series last year, but the event took place at the street circuit during the European Grand Prix.

"We are happy to announce that Valencia has been added to the calendar," said GP3 series boss Bruno Michel. "It will be the first time that the Series will race at Circuit de Ricardo Tormo.

"2013 promises to be a very strong season for GP3 with the introduction of the GP3/13 car, recording a laptime 4.2 seconds quicker than its previous generation on the same track. The driver line-up is probably the strongest we have ever had."

F1: Maldonado more relaxed this season

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 02 April 2013 | 11.06

By Jonathan Noble and Matt Beer Monday, April 1st 2013, 15:55 GMT

Pastor Maldonado, WilliamsPastor Maldonado says he is a much more relaxed character this year and will therefore avoid the controversies that blighted his 2012 campaign.

Maldonado received multiple penalties for driving infractions and collisions last season.

He believes the situation escalated because he gained a poor reputation, but says he has now learned his lesson.

"Now I have more experience," said Maldonado. "I showed that I was ready to win when the opportunity was there.

"Everyone can have a difficult moment. At the same time, I had a hard time with the stewards, because after I had a couple of incidents, they were maybe looking at me more than the others.

"But you learn from your mistakes. I'm more experienced and more relaxed now, and I'm looking forward to being away from the stewards..."

Maldonado admitted that it had taken time to accept that his Williams was not always going to be a competitive car.

"Maybe I was pushing too much. I did not realise that the car did not have the performance to win all the races," he said.

"In the past I've always been fighting for victories and Formula 1 is completely different.

"Sometimes you need to be happy with a 10th place."

RALLYX: Foust takes Lydden victory

By Sam Tremayne Monday, April 1st 2013, 16:42 GMT

Tanner FoustTanner Foust triumphed in the opening round of the European Rallycross Championship at Lydden on Monday.

The American started the six-car final from pole in his OMSE Ford Fiesta after winning the afternoon's opening semi.

He took full advantage of that fact to lead away from the line, his cause aided by fellow front-row starter Timur Timerzyanov electing to drive through the joker section - which all competitors must do at least once during each race - on the opening lap.

The reigning champion and winner of the second semi-final dropped to fourth as a result, but was still a threat to Foust until his left-front tyre punctured on lap three.

That left the Russian's Hansen Motorsport team-mate Timmy Hansen, second fastest in the opening semi, as the only other serious threat.

Having shadowed Foust for the first four laps, the Citroen DS3 driver's challenge faded when he had to take successive joker laps after being judged to have jumped the start.

Foust was therefore free to claim outright victory, ahead of Jussi-Petteri Leppihalme's Ford Focus and Davy Jeanney's Citroen C4.

Hansen, who had led the order heading into the semis, was fourth.

Former World Rally champion Petter Solberg fell victim to a puncture in his semi and could only finish fifth, missing out on the final.

Brother Henning, driving a Saab 9-3, overtook him late on, but missed out on a spot in the final as he came home fourth.

The elder Solberg was only the 14th-best driver in the heats, but secured a semi-final spot after the withdrawals of Alexander Hvaal, Liam Doran and Andreas Bakkerud before the opening semi.

FR3.5: Zeta Corse completes FR3.5 line-up

By Glenn Freeman Monday, April 1st 2013, 19:08 GMT
Mihai Marinescu Zeta Corse Formula Renault 3.5 test 2013 Barcelona

The 2013 Formula Renault 3.5 grid has been completed by Zeta Corse signing Mihai Marinescu and Emmanuel Piget ahead of this weekend's season opener at Monza.

Formula 2 race winner Marinescu returns to the series full-time after making 11 starts in 2009, while ex-Formula Renault and Euro F3 Open competitor Piget, who last raced in 2010, currently has a deal for Monza only.

Team boss Claudio Corradini explained that the team's upheaval over the winter (as it took over the BVM Target entry) had proved a setback as it tried to sort its driver line-up.

"The Zeta Corse programme started a little bit late," he said. "When it came to signing drivers many of them were already busy.

"Marinescu proved key in pre-season and will be with us throughout the year, but it's been tough to secure a second full-time racer.

"Despite sampling several drivers in testing, no deals have come. For the remaining rounds [after Monza], we'll see."

BTCC: Neal wins ahead of charging Shedden

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 01 April 2013 | 11.06

By Kevin Turner Sunday, March 31st 2013, 16:51 GMT

Matt Neal BTCC 2013 Brands HatchHonda salvaged a difficult opening weekend to its 2013 British Touring Car campaign with a one-two in the reversed-grid race three.

Despite both starting on the new soft tyre, which was expected to degrade, Matt Neal and Gordon Shedden came through to make amends for their problems earlier in the meeting.

Neal's Civic got away well from row two, crucially jumping the harder tyre-shod cars of Adam Morgan (Ciceley Toyota) and a slow-starting Sam Tordoff (works MG) to run second behind Mat Jackson's Motorbase Ford Focus.

Before he could make any further progress the safety car was brought out early when Dave Newsham lost his Speedworks Toyota Avensis at Paddock and clipped the unfortunate Rob Austin, causing the Audi to crash into the barriers. Both drivers escaped unharmed.

On the first lap of the restart Jackson ran wide at Druids and then appeared to hesitate, allowing Neal, Morgan and Jason Plato's MG to go by.

While Neal edged clear, Shedden was charging from the back after being excluded from race two.

The reigning champion forced his way by Jeff Smith (Eurotech Civic) just before half-distance to take sixth and soon closed on the pack fight for third, which was being slowed as Plato's soft rubber went off.

Tordoff and Shedden both overcame Andrew Jordan's Eurotech Honda and Plato, and then closed on Morgan.

Sam Tordoff BTCC 2013 Brands HatchWith two laps to go Tordoff lunged Morgan at Clearways, allowing Shedden to get a run on both to snatch second.

He then rapidly closed on Neal and finished almost side-by-side with his triple champion team-mate.

Tordoff finished as the top hard-tyred runner in third, followed by Morgan, Plato and Jordan.

After an early off at the first corner, Colin Turkington again put on a recovery drive to come home ninth.

Having tracked David Nye (Welch Focus) for much of the race, Lea Wood's Vauxhall Vectra pounced in the closing stages to top the S2000 class and become the third different Jack Sears Trophy winner of the weekend.

RALLYX: Hansen claims early Lydden lead

By Hal Ridge Sunday, March 31st 2013, 18:06 GMT

Timmy Hansen rallycross LyddenTimmy Hansen heads the order after the opening two heats of the first round of the FIA European Rallycross Championship at Lydden.

The young Swede, starting only his third supercar race, went fastest in both the first and second heats to earn first place overall.

His team-mate and reigning champion Timur Timerzyanov sits second.

Rallycross: the best-kept secret in motorsport?

2003 World Rally Champion Petter Solberg, who completed the first shakedown of his Citroen DS3 just days before the event, struggled in his first heat but then triumphed in his second.

Clutch problems led to the Norwegian first jumping the start and then suffering a poor getaway in his opener. He then touched a barrier on Chessons Drift, causing damage to the rear of his car, and compounded his problems by forgetting to take the joker lap.

He made amends by winning his second heat, in which he also set the second fastest time. He lies ninth overall heading into the final day.

"We still had all the issues from heat one, I just managed them better," Solberg said following his win.

"The rear of the car was still damaged; we didn't have time to fix it. I'm pretty disappointed but that's life."

British driver Liam Doran, also driving a brand new DS3 at Lydden, ended the opening day in sixth overall, two places higher than current British champion Julian Godfrey.

Sixteen-year-old Kevin Eriksson meanwhile tops the Super1600 category on his rallycross debut after finishing second and then fastest in his respective heats.

The final qualifying heats take place tomorrow morning ahead of the semi-finals and final in the afternoon.

BTCC: Wood loses S2000 class victory

By Kevin Turner Sunday, March 31st 2013, 18:12 GMT

Lea Wood BTCC 2013 Brands HatchBritish Touring Car Jack Sears Trophy frontrunner Lea Wood has lost his class victory from race three at Brands Hatch.

Wood's Vauxhall Vectra was the fastest S2000 runner in qualifying, but suspension problems in race one cost him class victory to James Kaye's AmD VW Golf.

A driveshaft failure caused Wood not to start race two, but he then overcame David Nye's Welch-run Ford to win the class in the final race.

Now Wood has been excluded after failing the ride height test.

"We changed the dampers [after race one] and unfortunately something wasn't quite right," he told AUTOSPORT.

"We're gutted, but the pace was there."

Wood's exclusion means Motorbase Ford driver Liam Griffin take his second class victory of the weekend.
