OTHER: Motors TV in free-to-air move

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 08 Oktober 2014 | 11.06

Tuesday, October 7th 2014, 16:53 GMT

Austin WEC start 2014

Television channel Motors TV will be available as a free-to-air service in the United Kingdom from October 9.

The motorsport-dedicated channel, which carries coverage of series including the World Rally Championship, World Endurance Championship, V8 Supercars, United SportsCar Championship and Formula 3 European championship, will be rolled out on Thursday to the 9.2million homes in the UK that receive TV broadcasts via standard free-to-air platforms.

The move follows a trial period for the previously satellite-only channel on the Arqiva Connect TV service.

"The Arqiva trial proved there are far more motorsport viewers out there than were originally watching on our other platforms," said Motors TV's head of programming and acquisitions Frederic Viger.

"From the start we saw it as a stepping stone and the fantastic response has given us the confidence to continue expanding.

"Plus, many more potential viewers have been very vocal on social media about wanting to receive the channel via Freeview HD, YouView and BT TV. Well, this is the result.

"For the first time ever terrestrial TV viewers can watch the widest range of live motorsport coverage in the UK, as well as world championships, international and national series, and the sort of grassroots categories that are already enjoyed by thousands of fans across the country."

Motors TV will be available on channel 71 for UK Freeview users.

F1: De Cesaris dies in motorbike accident

Sunday, October 5th 2014, 19:04 GMT

Andrea de Cesaris

Long-time Formula 1 driver Andrea de Cesaris has died in a motorcycle accident in Italy at the age of 55.

Italian press reports said de Cesaris was killed instantly in the crash in Rome.

De Cesaris was an F1 regular from 1980 to 1994, getting his first full season with McLaren in '81 after two guest appearances for Alfa Romeo alongside his European Formula 2 season a year earlier.

Although he did not win any grands prix, and never shook off a reputation for crashing earned in a tough rookie campaign, de Cesaris ultimately entered 214 F1 races and often got his invariably midfield machinery higher than it deserved.

He returned to Alfa for the 1982 and '83 seasons, which included his sole F1 pole at the '82 Long Beach race and a long spell in the lead of the '83 Belgian Grand Prix - which was the revised Spa's F1 debut.

Andrea de Cesaris, Alfa Romeo, 1982 Monaco GP

Stints with Ligier, Minardi, Brabham, Rial and Scuderia Italia followed, before de Cesaris played a major role in Jordan's impressive F1 debut season in 1991, when he again had a shot at a Spa victory.

After two seasons with Tyrrell, de Cesaris's F1 career appeared to be over at the end of 1993.

But he would be back again for much of 1994, first standing in for the banned Eddie Irvine at Jordan, and then taking the Sauber drive after Karl Wendlinger's horrific Monaco crash.

He finally retired at the end of 1994 with five podium finishes to his name and having been classified in the world championship top 10 three times - eighth with Alfa in 1982 and then ninth with Jordan in '91 and again for Tyrrell the following year.

F1: Mercedes rivalry 'back to normal'

By Ben Anderson Wednesday, October 1st 2014, 16:03 GMT

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, F1 2014

Formula 1 title rivals Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton both insist relations inside the Mercedes team are back to normal following recent tensions.

The relationship between Rosberg and Hamilton has been problematic since the early stages of the 2014 F1 campaign.

Tensions boiled over during May's Monaco Grand Prix, when Hamilton felt Rosberg had deliberately run down an escape road to cause a yellow flag and deny him a shot pole, while Mercedes disciplined Rosberg following contact between the pair on the second lap of August's Belgian GP.

Former world champion Alain Prost told AUTOSPORT that Mercedes made a mistake in its handling of the Spa fallout, and could have destabilised its team, but both drivers reckon the atmosphere inside the squad has mellowed.

"The atmosphere in the team is very good - I'm happy about that because we have a great feeling at the moment," said Rosberg, when asked by AUTOSPORT how things were inside the team.

"Yes we've had difficulties - there's been several difficulties through the year - and I think that's natural. We're fighting for race wins every single weekend.

"But we discuss and then we move on and I think we've been able to do that very well this year.

"At the moment it's a period where we're pushing all together in the same direction.

"Of course it's intense internally, definitely, and will remain that way, but it's being managed and it works well at the moment."

Hamilton, who overtook his team-mate in the title race for the first time since round five in Spain with back-to-back victories in the Italian and Singapore GPs, added: "It seems to be nice and relaxed - nothing really different to be honest.

"We went into Spa with the same kind of atmosphere and of course it was difficult after Spa, but things feel like they're back to normal."

F1: Caterham says it will race in Japan

Wednesday, October 1st 2014, 19:37 GMT

The Caterham Formula 1 team says its Leafield factory continues to function as normal despite speculation that goods were seized by authorities on Wednesday.

Caterham is facing an uncertain future since the team was sold to a group of investors advised by Colin Kolles in July.

Speculation was rife on Wednesday that bailiffs had seized goods from the team and that all its staff had been asked to leave the factory.

High Court enforcement officers The Sheriff's Office published a list of goods it claimed belong to Caterham, including parts to be used in this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix and a 2013 test car.

Caterham labelled the rumours as "unfounded and unsubstantiated" and claimed its preparations for the Suzuka race were going ahead as planned.

"There have been unfounded and unsubstantiated rumours concerning actions against 1MRT, the entrant and owner of CaterhamF1," said Caterham in a statement.

"An action was threatened yesterday against a supplier company to 1MRT. This company is not owned by 1MRT and it has no influence over the entry of CaterhamF1 or the entrant.

"Also contrary to uncontrolled rumours, all operations are currently in place at Leafield and the race team is doing its preparation in Japan."

AUTOGP: Sa Silva gets Zele Auto GP chance

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 01 Oktober 2014 | 11.06

By Peter Mills Tuesday, September 30th 2014, 16:58 GMT

Luis Sa Silva

Zele Racing will field GP3 racer Luis Sa Silva for the Auto GP season finale at Estoril next month.

Although the Angolan has considerable knowledge of the Portuguese ex-Formula 1 venue, it will be his first time behind the wheel of the 550bhp Auto GP machine.

"I'm happy to drive such a powerful racing car," said Sa Silva.

"It will be a tough challenge but I'm happy that it will happen at Estoril.

"It's one of the tracks I know the best as I've run a lot of laps there. I also consider it my home circuit because I live not too far away it in my second house."

The 24-year-old is 18th in this year's GP3 drivers' standings, having recorded a highest finish of seventh at Monza.

BATTLE FOR SECOND

Four drivers head to Estoril in contention for the runner-up position in the Auto GP drivers' standings.

Virtuosi UK's Tamas Pal Kiss holds a 13-point advantage over Super Nova driver Markus Pommer.

Former GP2 racer Kevin Giovesi trails Pommer by two points, with the second Virtuosi UK entry of Red Bull Ring winner Andrea Roda a further two points adrift.

Campos GP2 driver Kimiya Sato was crowned champion for Euronova at the Nurburgring in August, and has been awarded €85,000 from the Auto GP prize fund.

INDY: Penske: Pagenaud worth adding car for

By Mark Glendenning Tuesday, September 30th 2014, 16:31 GMT

Simon Pagenaud

Penske team president Tim Cindric says the squad has achieved a long-standing goal in signing Simon Pagenaud to drive a fourth car in its IndyCar line-up in 2015.

Pagenaud's arrival at Penske, which was confirmed on Monday, marks the first time that the team will field four full-time cars.

Cindric admitted that the expansion will serve up some challenges, but said that the opportunity to get Pagenaud on board will make any additional burden worthwhile.

"It's the first time we've run four cars with Team Penske, so it will certainly be a challenge," he said.

"Simon had had an association with [former Penske driver] Gil [de Ferran] back in the sportscar days when we were running the ALMS programme, and that's where we took notice of what his capabilities were.

"This has been the opportunity that we've had to bring him on board. If that meant changing to a four-car programme, that's what we were prepared to do."

Team Penske added a third car for Juan Pablo Montoya in 2014 after running just two cars for Will Power and Helio Castroneves the year before, and Cindric said that the success of that transition and the overall stability within the team made a competitive fourth car viable.

"I think if there was a time for us to add a fourth car, it was now," he said.

"We feel we've at least got people in the right places. And our focus of expanding is really just a matter of enhancing what you have.

Simon Pagenaud, Schmidt, leads Helio Castroneves, Penske, Mid-Ohio IndyCar 2014

"What we learn from the NASCAR side of it is if you don't have the two cars right, it's hard to add a third car."

No date has been set for Pagenaud's first on-track appearance in Penske colours, but Cindric said that he hopes that the Frenchman can become involved in Chevrolet's track-testing programme for its aero kit.

"Chevrolet has done a lot of work on the aero kit programme over the past couple of years, as I'm sure Honda has," he said.

"Understanding what the best approach is in how they plan to utilise their days... we're still working close with Chevrolet on that, and trying to incorporate Simon at some point in time would be great if we get that opportunity.

"But certainly before the year is out, we'd like to get him in our car at some point in time."

RALLYX: Andersson joins Ekstrom's RX team

By Hal Ridge Tuesday, September 30th 2014, 20:26 GMT

Pontus Tidemand, EKS Audi, Franciacorta World Rallycross 2014

Double Junior World Rally champion PG Andersson will replace current JWRC title holder Pontus Tidemand in the EKS World Rallycross team for next week's Istanbul Park event.

Tidemand, who has reached the final on three occasions this year with DTM star Mattias Ekstrom's Audi team, will now prioritise rallying again, contesting this weekend's Rally of France with a WRC2 class Ford Fiesta R5.

Andersson made his first start of the World RX season driving a Hedstroms Motorsport Skoda Fabia in Germany two weeks ago.

He just missed out on a place in the semi-finals, qualifying 13th.

The Swede will race the EKS Audi S1 for the first time at former Turkish Grand Prix Formula 1 venue Istabul Park, alongside compatriot Edward Sandstrom, who has made three appearances for the squad this year but has yet to reach a final.

A statement from the EKS team said: "We believe that P-G Andersson's experience and knowledge will help us collect valuable data for the future.

"Our target is clear: to become world champions in 2015."

Ekstrom's squad is yet to officially announce its full 2015 plans. Double DTM champion Ekstrom has dovetailed World RX outings for his team with his main programme in the touring car series this year, and won his home World RX round at Holjes in July.
