AWARD: Racing Car of the Year: Red Bull RB8

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 03 Desember 2012 | 11.06

By Jamie O'Leary Sunday, December 2nd 2012, 23:51 GMT

The Red Bull RB8 has been named as Racing Car of the Year at the 2012 AUTOSPORT Awards in London.

The machine, in which Sebastian Vettel became Formula 1's youngest triple world champion, overcame competition from McLaren and Ferrari to take the prize.

It is the third straight year in which a Red Bull has won the award, the RB6 having taken it in 2010 and the RB7 last year.

The RB8 also beat off competition from the Le Mans-winning Audi R18 e-tron Quattro, the DeltaWing DW LM12 and the Lotus E20 to win the award, which was presented by 'Rush' director Ron Howard.

Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey collected the award Peter Prodromu, Rob Marshall, Mark Ellis and Paul Monaghan, his key allies in the squad's design team.

"It took us a long time to get any consistency in to the car," Newey said. "In fact despite some good early races like Bahrain and Monaco, it was Singapore before we had that consistency.

"And then we had the finale in Brazil and when you saw Bruno Senna's car up in the air, having hit Seb, you thought it was all over. But we managed to come through. It was pretty tense."

The successor to Red Bull's all-conquering RB7, the RB8 finished second on its grand prix debut in Australia in Vettel's hands and then scored its first pole and victory in Bahrain, again via the German.

Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Interlagos 2012It was in the latter stages of the season however that the car came into its own, helping Vettel to an unmatched chain of four straight victories between Singapore and India. It was that chain that swung the championship momentum towards Vettel.

The RB8 was the first car to win multiple races in 2012, with Mark Webber following up Vettel's Bahrain win by triumphing in Monaco.

The Australian was also victorious in Britain, taking the RB8's win count to seven in total for the season. It also claimed eight pole positions and set seven fastest laps as Red Bull racked up its third consecutive double of drivers' and constructors' championships.

AWARD: International Racing Driver: Vettel

By Sam Tremayne Monday, December 3rd 2012, 00:10 GMT

Sebastian Vettel, AUTOSPORT Awards 2012Sebastian Vettel has been named International Racing Driver of the Year for the third straight year at the AUTOSPORT Awards in London.

Vettel became the youngest triple champion in Formula 1 history this season, but only after finally prevailing in an intensely close title fight with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso, which culminated in a wild Brazilian Grand Prix finale.

Vettel collected his award from nine-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb.

Asked whether 2012 was his toughest season, Vettel said: "I think yes; it was a long, long year of ups and downs. Maybe in the beginning I didn't have the car I liked - maybe it was competitive in the race but in qualifying it was difficult for me to find that extra step.

"At the end of the season though we got more comfortable, it felt better. Obviously we had some tough luck early in the season but in the end we scored some big points and were in the lead.

"Waking up on Sunday morning in Brazil I didn't expect so many things would happen, I think the season was summed up in that race. I didn't go as planned...

"Obviously it was a horrible feeling to see cars coming one way and me going the wrong way. I got the hit from behind and got turned around, so I quickly tried to pull the clutch and roll down the hill to not break the car.

"It was very difficult to work out how much damage I had but I realised quickly I had survived. And then after that potentially everything that could have happened, happened.

"Time goes by quickly if you look back now. I remember my first Friday with BMW Sauber and now it is five years ago. For me it sounds like a big number but it doesn't feel like it.

"You do grow up, there are certain things you realise in the car, you get a bit more experience, a bit more relaxed.

Sergio Perez and Bruno Senna crash at Interlagos"I had a very good night Sunday after the [Interlagos] race, it was fun... but then I felt so bad the next morning I thought I had to go to the gym to get rid of [the feeling] and it all starts all over again."

The 25-year-old German supplemented victory in Bahrain with a string of four straight wins between Singapore and India, taking him to an unmatched total of five grand prix triumphs during the season. He also claimed six poles and 10 podiums.

Perhaps more remarkable than such statistics were his comeback drives. Demoted to the back of the grid for the Abu Dhabi GP he had qualified third but was unable to provide a big enough fuel sample - he charged back to salvage third at the flag.

That helped lend him a crucial buffer heading into the Interlagos denouement, but once again he did it the hard way as a poor getaway and early contact threatened to derail his title bid. Vettel dragged his battered car to sixth, sealing his third crown by just three points from Alonso.

AWARD: McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC: Dennis

By Jamie O'Leary Monday, December 3rd 2012, 00:15 GMT

Jake Dennis, AUTOSPORT Awards 2012Formula Renault NEC champion Jake Dennis has won a Formula 1 test with McLaren after being named the 24th winner of the McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award.

Dennis, who also gets £100,000, full membership of the British Racing Drivers' Club, a TW Steel watch, and Puma racewear for a year, was revealed as the winner at the AUTOSPORT Awards in London on Sunday night.

The 17-year-old Briton was presented with the Award by McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale, AUTOSPORT publishing director Rob Aherne and BRDC president Derek Warwick.

Dennis said: "It's very hard to put your emotions across in a situation like this. It's such a relief to win this.

"For me it's incredible but also for Oliver Rowland to have won it last year means it's two straight wins for drivers supported by the Racing Steps Foundation and I want to thank them for their support."

Dennis beat Star Mazda champion Jack Hawksworth, Formula Renault NEC race-winners Josh Hill and Jordan King - who finished runner-up to Dennis - Formula Renault Eurocup and ALPS frontrunner Melville McKee and Formula Renault BARC runner-up Josh Webster to the prize after a number of tests, including driving a Formula 2 machine, a DTM Mercedes and a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 at Silverstone last month.

Former recipients of the award include 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button, former grand prix winner David Coulthard and IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti.

Racing Steps Foundation-backed teenager Dennis, the Intersteps champion of 2011, stormed to the NEC title with Fortec Motorsport.

On his debut season in Formula Renault he won three races and took a further eight podium finishes to lead a British 1-2-3 in the final points, beating fellow award finalists King and Hill.

He also made selected appearances in the Formula Renault Eurocup and finished a strong second at Spa-Francorchamps.

V8: Tander takes pole for V8 finale

Sunday, December 2nd 2012, 00:04 GMT

Garth Tander, HRT Holden, Sydney V8 2012Garth Tander gave Holden Racing Team its first V8 Supercars pole position since Barbagallo in May as he topped qualifying for the season finale in Sydney.

In what was by far HRT's strongest qualifying performance of 2012, Tander beat Ford Performance Racing's Will Davison to pole, while the resurgent James Courtney put the second factory Holden third.

Champion Jamie Whincup will start back in 24th, having lost his best qualifying time when he caused one of the session's three red flags by spinning into Turn 7 and knocking the tyre stack into the road. Mechnical problems for Russell Ingall and Karl Reindler prompted the other stoppages.

Jonathon Webb qualified fourth in the Tekno Holden, ahead of Saturday race-winner Craig Lowndes and his rival for the championship runner-up spot Mark Winterbottom.

Race one polesitter Tim Slade was eighth this time.

MOTOGP: Ducati seeks positives as testing ends

By Sam Tremayne Friday, November 30th 2012, 18:17 GMT

Ducati Nicky HaydenDucati insists there were still positives to gleam from its final test of 2012 despite the return of bad weather and a 'freak' injury for Andrea Dovizioso.

The Italian managed just three laps on the opening day before his running was curtailed by a neck injury.

While he had hoped to return, he was unable to do so over the second or third days.

Nicky Hayden therefore had sole responsibility for testing new parts and gathering data for the Italian team ahead of the obligatory two-month winter break.

The American completed a full programme on the first day, but a small crash denied him the chance to go out in optimum conditions on Thursday. The final day was then disrupted by rain and wind.

Team manager Vittoriano Guareschi admitted the setbacks had been far from ideal, but said the test had still been of value.

"Obviously, we would have preferred that things played out differently, but in such cases, you have to just make the best of the situation and gather as much good data as circumstances allow," he explained.

"We continued the testing program that we started at Valencia, looking for confirmation on the frame and swingarm that we tried in the latter part of the season.

"Unfortunately, Andrea's fluke problem with his neck was a setback, but Nicky turned some good lap times despite the tyres being at their limit in the cool conditions.

"Now we need to work at the factory over the winter in order to give our riders a competitive package at the first Sepang test in February."

Hayden echoed the view, adding: "Things didn't go as smoothly as we had hoped, but the test has been useful despite everything.

"We were able to evaluate the new frame and swingarm, as well as a few new settings, and have a lot of information to work with."

Dovizioso meanwhile expressed concern about his neck, saying further tests will be needed.

"It seems that the problem is probably bigger than we had previously thought, and I'll have to undergo some further medical tests," he said.

"It's something I had experienced at the GP in Malaysia, where I crashed twice, and in Australia, where I crashed once, and both times I had physiotherapy treatments and anti-inflammatory medicine.

"It re-emerged last week two days after a crash on my motocross bike, but the same treatment worked and I felt fine when I came to Jerez for the test.

"Unfortunately, it happened again after just a few laps, and this time we weren't able to resolve it with physio and anti-inflammatories."

V8: Slade claims maiden V8 pole

Saturday, December 1st 2012, 02:43 GMT

Tim Slade takes Sydney V8 poleTim Slade claimed his maiden V8 Supercars pole position in qualifying for race one of the 2012 season finale on Sydney's Homebush street circuit.

Rain showers in the provisional qualifying session meant a host of big names missed out on the top-10 shoot-out in the scramble for laptimes when the circuit was at its best.

Champion Jamie Whincup will start only 14th, two places ahead of his Triple 8 Holden team-mate Craig Lowndes, while erstwhile title contender Mark Winterbottom is back in 25th for Ford Performance Racing.

Winterbottom's team-mate Will Davison grabbed the fastest time in that session, but an error in the pole decider left him only second as Slade secured his first pole in the Rosenberg/Stone Brothers Ford.

The rest of the top 10 has a very unfamiliar look. Steven Johnson, Alexandre Premat and Michael Caruso complete the top five.

Shane van Gisbergen qualified eighth for his final race in the series. Van Gisbergen recently shocked the sport by announcing that he was not only leaving Stone Brothers at the end of the season, but walking away from V8s completely.

A loss of oil pressure meant Rick Kelly could not complete a shoot-out lap so he starts 10th.
