F1: Russian GP misses application deadline

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 02 Agustus 2013 | 11.07

By Aleksander Kabanovsky Thursday, August 1st 2013, 16:16 GMT

SochiRussia has missed the deadline to submit its application to the FIA to hold a Formula 1 race in 2014.

Although work is ongoing at the Sochi venue, and organisers announced last week that they had pencilled in an October 19 date, doubts have been cast on the event amid a dispute they are having with the Russian Automobile Federation (RAF).

According to correspondence distributed by the RAF on Tuesday, it had until July 31 to formally submit to motor racing's governing body an official application for its country to host the Formula 1 race next year.

But the RAF refused to lodge the necessary paperwork by that date because of financial disputes between itself and Sochi's promoters.

The only avenue left open for the Russian GP now is if the RAF can prove that there was a 'force majeure' reason for it to miss the July 31 deadline.

A statement issued by the RAF said: "The application to the FIA for submitting the Russian Grand Prix to the 2014 Formula 1 calendar was not sent in proper time as JSC Omega (Promoter) didn't fulfil the necessary conditions.

"That is: [it] didn't sign a contract with the Russian Grand Prix organiser, didn't sign a deal for an application submission and also didn't pay a fee to the FIA for including an event on the FIA F1 calendar.

"RAF informs that it is ready to include the Russian Grand Prix on to the FIA calendar under force-majeure conditions, permissible by the FIA, as soon as the promoter fulfils all the necessary formalities."

One of the areas of dispute is of marshalling personnel at the Russian Grand Prix, with the RAF having started its own project with the FIA Institute, in partnership with Australia's CAMS, to prepare safety personnel.

It has made it clear that it wants support from the Russian GP promoters to fund this ongoing programme.

Sergey Ivanov, CEO of RAF, said: "The F1 grand prix of Sochi gave a huge boost to develop the system of staff preparation.

"Until the end of 2012, we received grants from the FIA to organise seminars as well as do other work. Now we need to continue that programme and broaden it, which requires additional funding for the RAF."

Other areas of dispute include the commercial and intellectual property rights to the grand prix, as well as the length of the contract between the RAF and the race promoters.

LEMANS: Asian series boss expects grid to grow

By Gary Watkins Thursday, August 1st 2013, 16:04 GMT

The grid for new Asian Le Mans Series will grow over the remainder of the season from the 11 cars entered for this weekend's championship opener at the Inje Speedium in South Korea, according to the series boss.

Mark Thomas admitted disappointment with the entry for the first of this year's four Asian LMS races, but insisted that more cars would arrive before the end of the season.

"Of course we would have liked more, but the most important thing is that we are here and the race is on," he told AUTOSPORT from Inje. "Now we have proved that the series is real, other entrants can start contemplating us as a viable option.

"I am not going to flash out big numbers and say we are going to have lots more cars at subsequent rounds, but we are going to grow steadily and organically."

Eight to 10 GT300 cars from the Super GT Series will join the Asian LMS grid for what will also be a round of their championship at Fuji next month.

The grid for Sunday's has been boosted by the addition of three cars to the provisional entry list revealed last month.

The AAI team, a regular in the Asian GT Series, has upped its entry from one to two GTC class McLaren MP4-12Cs, while there will also be two Lamborghini Super Trofeo one-make racers on the grid.

Thomas revealed that uncertainty over the South Korea race due to management problems at the circuit last week put off a couple of potential entrants from Japan.

The entry at Inje, which was originally to be called Autopia, is led by two Morgan-Nissan LMP2s run by the works OAK Racing and Chinese KCMG squads.

Sixteen-year-old Malaysian Akash Nandy, who competed in the Toyota Racing Series earlier this year, will race the KCMG car together with former Japanese Formula 3 racer Gary Thompson and sometime Indy Lights driver James Winslow.

Ho-Pin-Tun, who raced in GP2 for three seasons, leads the line-up in the OAK car.

There are five GT3 cars, one GT300 and the two Lambos running in the GTC division and a solo GTE class Ferrari 458 Italia entered by former Le Mans 24 Hours class-winning team Taisan Racing.

WRC: Neuville leads in Finland after day one

By Scott Mitchell Thursday, August 1st 2013, 18:14 GMT

Thierry NeuvilleThierry Neuville capped an impressive opening day of Rally Finland by winning the Super Special Stage and earning himself breathing space at the top of the leaderboard.

The M-Sport Ford driver shared the lead with Volkswagen's Sebastien Ogier and twice with Citroen's Mikko Hirvonen, but moved himself 5.2s clear of the championship leader after SS6.

Hirvonen had replaced Ogier as the joint leader after victory on SS4, but suffered a disastrous SS5. With the cars being sent out in groups of four for a rain-affected second Himos leg, Hirvonen - the last of the leaders to run, 30s after the rest - blamed deteriorating stage conditions as he lost 20s and dropped to fifth.

Ogier also struggled to match Neuville's pace on the fifth stage, slipping behind the Belgian's team-mate Mads Ostberg - though he did manage to reclaim the position on SS6.

The Norwegian's SS5 victory had brought him to just 2.5s behind Neuville, but a sluggish run on the Super Special cost him time, and left him 8.9s adrift.

Hirvonen also regained a position on the Super Special, at the expense of Juho Hanninen. He is now just 0.5s ahead of Kris Meeke, who rounded out his first day in the DS3 in sixth place.

Jari-Matti Latvala's day ended early after the completion of SS4. The Finn's Polo was damaged after hitting a rock on SS2 and, despite hobbling through the third and fourth runs, he withdrew before the start of the day's penultimate stage.

Jari Ketomaa's domination of WRC2 continued in the R5 Fiesta. He boosted his lead to 24s, with Robert Kubica leading the chase. The Pole had overtaken Elfyn Evans earlier in the evening.

The second day begins with SS7 on Friday morning at 06:48 GMT.
