INDY: Pagenaud wins crazy Baltimore race

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 02 September 2013 | 11.06

By Mark Glendenning Sunday, September 1st 2013, 21:35 GMT

Simon Pagenaud, Schmidt, Baltimore IndyCar 2013

Simon Pagenaud emerged victorious from a chaotic IndyCar race on the streets of Baltimore.

The Frenchman was one of a cluster of drivers involved in a frantic battle following a late restart, and took the lead from Marco Andretti with seven laps remaining.

As Andretti's charge faded, Josef Newgarden emerged as the main threat to Pagenaud's chances, and the American managed to reduce what had been a 1.9-second deficit to 0.9s within just two laps.

But he leaned too hard in his tyres in doing so, and Pagenaud was able to pull away to win by 4.1s. The win moves the Schmidt driver up to third in the points.

Newgarden held on for second, putting the Sarah Fisher Hartman driver onto the podium for the first time in his IndyCar career, while Sebastien Bourdais was one of many to survive contact on his way to third for Dragon.

Aside from the late action, the race was defined by the proliferation of incidents, a string of disasters for the main title protagonists, and another development in the rivalry between Penske and Ganassi.

A long stretch through the middle of the race was held almost entirely under yellows due to constant accidents on restarts, but the most significant came when Will Power skewed towards the wall on the front straight and slammed straight into Scott Dixon, putting the Kiwi into the barriers.

The clash came just a week after Dixon was penalised for hitting one of Power's pit crew at Sonoma, and the Kiwi's anger was further stoked when IndyCar refused the team's request to bring his car back to the pits so that it could attempt a repair in the hope of salvaging some points.

Prior to the crash, Dixon had been in a strong position to capitalise on what was shaping up to be an awful afternoon for points leader Helio Castroneves, whose dramas included an accident at the start that required him to pit for a new front wing, a bad pitstop in which he was dropped off the jack before his right-front wheel had been fitted, and a drive-through penalty for hitting one of his own tyres in the pits.

Instead, Castroneves came out of the afternoon having actually extended his points lead to 49. He crossed the line in ninth.

Ryan Hunter-Reay's title defence also took a hit when he encountered an anti-stall problem on the first lap that dropped him towards the rear of the field, and his misery was completed when his car shut down with an electrical problem later on.

The Andretti driver was one of several to be sidelined with mechanical or engine problems during the afternoon, joining a list that also included Dario Franchitti, Takuma Sato and Luca Filippi.

LEMANS: Fassler, Lotterer, Treluyer win in WEC

By Gary Watkins Sunday, September 1st 2013, 23:38 GMT

WEC Interlagos podium

Reigning champions Marcel Fassler, Andre Lotterer and Benoit Treluyer claimed victory in the Sao Paulo 6 Hours for Audi to close the gap at the head of the World Endurance Championship.

The trio's Audi R18 e-tron quattro won by three clear laps over team-mates and championship leaders Allan McNish, Tom Kristensen and Loic Duval, who endured an incident-filled race on the way to second place.

The battle for victory in Brazil became an all-Audi affair little more than half an hour in to the race when the solo Toyota TS030 HYBRID driven by Stephane Sarrazin was taken out by Dominik Kraihamer's Lotus-Praga T128 LMP2.

McNish had taken the lead from the pole-winning Audi in the hands of Fassler away from the start and built a lead of eight seconds when the safety car came out as a result of the Sarrazin/Kraihamer incident.

The positions of the two Audis was reversed during the protracted yellow-flag period after Tom Kristensen took over the #2 car and was caught behind a slow car. This allowed Lotterer, who took over one lap later, to jump ahead.

Lotterer was able to pull an 18-second gap to Kristensen over the following double stint, a gap that grew to just over half a minute when Treluyer and Duval took over their respective Audis.

Duval reduced the gap to as little as 22s before losing the right rear wheel as he left the pits in the middle of his stint.

The car lost a lap as a result and then more time with two stop-go penalties: one of 30s for speeding in the pits and one of 60s for an unsafe release.

"I was able to build a gap to Tom, but you never know what is going to happen," said Lotterer. "It was very hard to keep the tyres working out there, so things could have changed around.

"In the end it is a win and this is what we have to do four more times to successfully defend our title."

The Rebellion Racing team took its first overall podium in the WEC with its Lola-Toyota B12/60 shared by Nick Heidfeld, Nicolas Prost and Mathias Beche.

The #26 G-Drive/Delta-ADR ORECA-Nissan 03 shared by Mike Conway, Roman Rusinov and John Martin dominated the LMP2 division on the way to fourth overall.

The pole-winning P2 car had a clear edge over its opposition as it cruised to a one-lap victory over the OAK Racing Morgan-Nissan LMP2 shared by Bertrand Baguette, Martin Plowman and Ricardo Gonzalez.

The margin of victory in GTE Pro was just 1.4s in favour of the AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia shared by Gianmaria Bruni and Giancarlo Fisichella, which was chased for the better part of the race by the lead Aston Martin Vantage GTE of Stefan Mucke and Darren Turner.

GTE Am honours went to the Aston shared by Jamie Campbell-Walter and Stuart Hall, which inherited the lead when the sister car driven by Nicki Thiim, Kristian Poulsen and Christoffer Nygaard lost a wheel late in the race.

Victory for Fassler, Lotterer and Treluyer means they have closed the 30-point gap to their team-mates to 22 points.

NASCAR: Kyle Busch takes Atlanta victory

By Connell Sanders Jr Monday, September 2nd 2013, 03:59 GMT

Kyle Busch claimed victory in the NASCAR Sprint Cup's 500-mile night race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

The Joe Gibbs Toyota driver emerged in the lead during the final pitstops and was able to control the closing stages. The win puts Busch's place in this year's Chase beyond doubt.

His erstwhile team-mate Joey Logano made progress through the field during the final stint to take second for Penske, having earlier lost ground with an out-of-sequence pitstop, but Busch remained seven tenths of a second clear up front.

Logano's final pass was on Martin Truex Jr, who coped with both a fractured wrist and a melting support cast on his hand to take third in his Waltrip Toyota.

Both Buschs were in the top four, with Kurt recovering from 32nd on the grid to fourth for Furniture Row, helped in large part by an astounding restart in which he made up eight positions to appear in second place.

Juan Pablo Montoya led much of the first part of the race, but faded to seventh in the end.

His fall was not as great as Carl Edwards' - the Roush Fenway man looking dominant at times early on only to slump to 18th, unable to regain the ground lost when he stayed on old tyres as most around him took fresh rubber mid-race.

Reigning champion Brad Keselowski's bid to at least be in contention for a second title struck another blow when his Penske Ford ran into engine problems while he was leading.

He was eventually classified 35th, leaving him 15th in the points with just Richmond next week remaining before the Chase cut-off.

Championshp leader Jimmie Johnson also had a bad night, getting involved in two collisions and finishing four laps down in 28th.

At one stage he looked set to finally lose the lead in the standings, but was granted a reprieve when nearest rival Clint Bowyer had an engine failure when running in a position to jump to the top of the championship.

Polesitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr immediately slumped down the order when the race began and finished 16th.
