F1: Warning over Schumacher speculation

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 05 Januari 2014 | 11.06

Saturday, January 4th 2014, 12:12 GMT

Michael Schumacher, 2012

Michael Schumacher's management has urged that speculative reports about the seven-time Formula 1 world champion's condition should be disregarded.

Schumacher remains in a critical but stable condition in an induced coma in a Grenoble hospital having suffered severe head injuries in a skiing accident last Sunday.

His manager Sabine Kehm issued a statement on Saturday morning underlining that information regarding Schumacher's health would only be issued via the hospital or herself, following reports that attributed comments to ex-F1 driver Philippe Streiff.

"Michael's condition remains critical but stable," said Kehm's statement.

"We would like to clearly stress that any information regarding Michael's health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be treated as invalid and pure speculation.

"In consultation with the doctors treating Michael, it is not expected there there will be any press conference before Monday."

Kehm also addressed reports that police were examining footage from a helmet camera worn by Schumacher during the skiing trip on which the accident happened.

"Michael's helmet camera was voluntarily given to the investigating authorities by the family," she said.

"That this should have been done against the wishes of the family is untrue.

"We ask you to respect the continued privacy of the family."

On Friday evening Robert Kubica, who suffered life-threatening injuries of his own in his February 2011 rally crash, expressed his concern about press intrusion affecting Schumacher's family.

"I was in a similar situation and I know media can play quite a hard game in a very difficult period for him, his family and close friends," said Kubica.

"I wish him all the best and definitely keep fingers crossed he will recover and everything will be fine."

OTHER: Jarvis, Walker team up for Daytona

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 03 Januari 2014 | 11.06

By Gary Watkins Thursday, January 2nd 2014, 17:00 GMT

Jarvis, Walker team up for Daytona

British sportscar stars Oliver Jarvis and James Walker are teaming up in an Audi R8 for this month's Daytona 24 Hours.

Factory Audi driver Jarvis and Walker, a race winner in LMP2 in last year's World Endurance Championship, will join forces in one of the German manufacturer's GT Daytona class contenders entered by the Fall-Line Motorsports squad for the United SportsCar Championship opener on January 25/26.

The British duo will share the R8 LMS together with experienced US sportscar pairing of Charles Putnam and Charles Espenlaub, who will contest the full season in the car.

Jarvis, who won the Grand-Am GT class at Daytona last year with Alex Job Racing, said: "It looks like Fall-Line is a strong team and I have good team-mates.

"Audi wasn't expecting much last year, but ended up winning the race. Now everyone expects them to win the race, but it is probably going to be even tougher with 10 or so strong cars that can all do the job.

"It will be good to share a car with James, although my overriding memory about him is the both of us sitting in the gravel at Turn 1 at Donington Park after tangling while we were battling for the lead. I can't remember if it happened in Formula Ford or Formula 3."

Walker, who was a race winner in the GTE Pro class of the European Le Mans Series (formerly the LMS) in 2011 and '12, explained that the deal to drive one of five Audis on the entry for Daytona came out of the blue.

"I actually found out about it on Christmas Day, but it is good to begin the season in a strong car," he said.

"It's great to be partnering Olly at Daytona: with his Audi experience he's the perfect team-mate and I'm sure I'll be able to learn a lot about this year's Audi R8 LMS from him."

Jarvis and Walker will both take part in the official, three-day pre-Daytona test, which starts on Friday.

Illinois-based Fall-Line graduated to the GT ranks of Grand-Am, which has merged with the American Le Mans Series to create the USC for 2014, at mid-season last year from the feeder Continental Tire Challenge series.

Jarvis's full programme with Audi for 2014 has yet to be announced, but it looks certain that he will again be part of its LMP1 roster for the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Spa WEC rounds.

OTHER: Brundle set to make Daytona debut

By Gary Watkins Thursday, January 2nd 2014, 19:51 GMT

Alex Brundle

Alex Brundle is set to make his Daytona 24 Hours debut with American Le Mans Series champions Muscle Milk/Pickett Racing later this month.

The 23-year-old Briton, who was runner-up in the LMP2 class in last year's World Endurance Championship, will take part in this weekend's official Daytona test with the team.

He is scheduled to contest the United SportsCar Championship opener on January 25/26 in its ORECA-Nissan 03 alongside team regulars Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr.

Brundle, whose father Martin won Daytona with Jaguar in 1988, told AUTOSPORT: "I'm here at the test [which begins tomorrow, Friday] with Muscle Milk and the plan is for me to do the race, so it is a great way to start 2014.

"The whole thing is down the input of Nissan [with which Brundle has links going back to 2012] and Darren Cox [the manufacturer's global motorsport boss], so I have to say thanks to them for getting me this great opportunity."

"I'm very excited to be here and to get the chance to learn about the US scene from Klaus and Lucas."

The Muscle Milk entry is one of six LMP2 machines that will go up against 10 uprated Daytona Prototypes and the solo DeltaWing the USC's Prototype class.

GP2: Campos signs Pic for GP2 return

By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, January 2nd 2014, 21:09 GMT

Arthur Pic

Arthur Pic has become the first driver to be signed for the Campos Racing team for its return to the GP2 series this year.

The 22-year-old Frenchman, the younger brother of Formula 1 driver Charles, will make his GP2 debut after competing in Formula Renault 3.5 for the past three seasons.

Pic, racing with the new AV Formula team, finished the 2013 championship in eighth position.

He has also won races and currently lies second in this season's MRF Racing series, which concludes in Chennai on February 14-16.

"We followed him closely and his future looks brilliant," said team boss Adrian Campos.

"I am sure that he will bring us great joy in terms of competitiveness. We are also working to make him feel immediately at home."

Campos returns to GP2 after taking over the Addax team entry. The Alzira-based Spanish squad competed in GP2 in its inaugural season in 2005 and stayed until 2008.

RALLYX: Rustad launches Euro Rallycross bid

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 02 Januari 2014 | 11.07

By Hal Ridge Wednesday, January 1st 2014, 13:45 GMT

Rustad

Former touring car star Tommy Rustad will contest the 2014 FIA European Rallycross Championship at the wheel of a Volvo C30.

The Norwegian drove in two European championship events last season and will focus all of his attention on rallycross this year.

"We have the budget to do six races in 2014, so we will do the five European championship rounds and also Holjes in Sweden," said Rustad. "I am really looking forward to it, and of course my goal is to win the championship.

"I think the European championship will be very competitive, just like the world championship will be too, so we will have to work hard."

One of the most experienced all-rounders on the rallycross grid, Rustad has clear ideas about where he needs to improve ahead of the coming season.

"I need to be much better off the start-line," he said. "When we make a good start we can be fastest. Once the car is rebuilt we will start testing as soon as we can.

"We need to see if we can change settings on the car, or if I need to change my own style."

Rustad drove a Renault Laguna to the BTCC Independents' crown in 1998, before moving to Swedish and European Touring Cars. He raced a full European rallycross season in 2006, finishing third.

He contested the British rounds of the FIA World Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch in 2009, driving a works, bio-ethanol powered Volvo C30, but retired from both races.

OTHER: Rockenfeller to Spirit of Daytona team

By Gary Watkins Wednesday, January 1st 2014, 12:53 GMT

Spirit of Daytona

DTM champion Mike Rockenfeller will bid for a second victory in the Daytona 24 Hours with the Spirit of Daytona Corvette squad later this month.

The Audi driver has switched from the Action Express squad, with which he won the event in 2010 and contested last year's race, to drive the Spirit of Daytona squad's solo Corvette-bodied Coyote-Chevrolet Daytona Prototype in the inaugural United SportsCar Championship round on January 25/26.

The 30-year-old will share the car with team regular Richard Westbrook and Spirit of Daytona returnee Michael Valiante in a deal that is set to encompass the Sebring 12 Hours and Petit Le Mans USC enduros in March and October respectively.

Rockenfeller, who won the Le Mans 24 Hours with Audi in 2010, said: "It's always good to go back to Daytona and it looks like I should be doing three races with Spirit of Daytona in 2014, which is even better."

The German had been in talks to race for Action Express again this year before Sebastien Bourdais signed to join Christian Fittipaldi and Joao Barbosa in its lead Coyote.

Valiante is returning to Spirit of Daytona for the full USC season in 2014 after taking a victory in the four races he contested alongside Westbrook with the team in 2012.

The Canadian takes the place of Ricky Taylor, who is going back to the family Wayne Taylor Racing squad to partner brother Jordan for the full season.

Team owner Troy Flis said: "Michael did a great job for us in 2012 and we are really excited for him to be back with us full time this year. He and Westy work really well together."

Rockenfeller will not be returning to Le Mans in 2014 with Audi in order for him to concentrate on the defence of his DTM crown.

LEMANS: LMP2 star Pla re-signs with OAK squad

By Gary Watkins Wednesday, January 1st 2014, 14:53 GMT

Pla

French sportscar star Olivier Pla will remain with the OAK Racing team for a third full season in 2014.

Pla, 32, has re-signed for the team that he joined for the final races of 2011, although his programme for the coming season has yet to be determined beyond taking part in this weekend's official Daytona 24 Hours test in its Morgan-Nissan LMP2.

Pla, who finished second in the LMP2 points in last year's World Endurance Championship, said: "OAK has a lot of ambition, Jacques [Nicolet, the team owner] is very motivated for the future and I have built up a very good relationship with the team."

Pla explained that he expected to contest a mixed programme of events in both the United SportsCar Championship in America, of which Daytona is the opening round, and the WEC in either LMP1 or P2 or both.

"I am waiting to see what kind of programme I will have and expect to have some news soon," he added.

OAK has yet to confirm its plans for 2014 beyond its one-car assault on the USC.

It is unclear if the Le Mans-based team will field a works LMP2 entry after Nicolet declared in September that he wanted to leave the secondary prototype division to its customers.

It has since been announced that Onroak Automotive, OAK's sister company that builds the cars, is working on an P2 coupe design that will carry the badges of the famous Ligier marque.

OAK's plans for its new LMP1 coupe also remain in a state of flux because it has yet to agree an engine deal for the car.

Roman Rusinov a four-time P2 class winner in last year's WEC with the G-Drive/Delta-ADR squad, will also drive the OAK Morgan at the three-day Daytona test, which begins on Friday.

New OAK team manager Philippe Dumas, the architect of Hexis Racing's GT successes, explained that this was more with an eye to a possible link-up in the WEC than a full USC campaign.

"Roman will do the test to find out a little bit more about the team and the engineers; we are looking towards the WEC," he said.

Colombian Gustavo Yacaman, who contested last year's Grand-Am series with Michael Shank Racing, will also take part in the Daytona test with OAK as a possible lead-in to a full USC programme.

Dumas explained that other possibles for the USC car were Martin Plowman, who was part of the OAK's title-winning WEC line-up in 2013, and IndyCar regular EJ Viso.

SSTARS: SuperTouringSeries faces delay

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 01 Januari 2014 | 11.06

Tuesday, December 31st 2013, 14:19 GMT
Vallelunga Superstars 2013

The rebranded SuperTouringSeries, formerly Superstars, has delayed the introduced of its new 'League of Teams' format until 2015.

The series had planned to launch the new initiative, which effectively makes the teams stakeholders in the championship, in 2014.

But despite attracting interest from leading outfits such as Triple Eight, Carlin and Fortec Motorsport, it feels there has been insufficient time to make the plan work effectively.

Daniel Audetto, the CEO of the new company running SuperTouringSeries, PARE said: "Given the tight schedule and the upcoming release of new models which will replace the current ones in the upper range of the market, the majority of the teams have confirmed the intention to participate in the championship next season.

"Therefore, the start of the 'League' will be postponed to 2015."

PARE is examining whether it is feasible to run the championship in 2014 without the league format.

It is in discussion with the teams to assess how many cars it could expect on the grid.

F1: Speed not a factor in Schumacher fall

Tuesday, December 31st 2013, 13:22 GMT

Michael Schumacher, 2012

Michael Schumacher was not skiing at high speed when he fell and hit a rock, according to his official spokesperson Sabine Kehm.

Although Kehm was not present at the ski trip in Meribel, after speaking to other members of Schumacher's skiing party, she believes that the accident on Sunday happened at low speed.

"Michael and the group have been skiing on normal slopes," she said

"In between red and blue slopes there was an area and they went into that.

"He helped a friend who had fallen and went into deep snow, hit a rock and was catapulted into the air and landed head down.

"It was extreme bad luck, not because he was at speed."

Schumacher remains in an induced coma in Grenoble hospital, although there has been a slight improvement in his condition overnight.

The surgeons who have attended to him believe that had he not been wearing a ski helmet he would not have survived the fall.

F1: Button: Le Mans not in future plans

By Edd Straw Tuesday, December 31st 2013, 16:09 GMT

Button contemplates his future

Jenson Button is not interested in racing in sportscars once his Formula 1 career is over.

The Briton's ex-F1 rival Mark Webber has left the world champion Red Bull team to front Porsche's LMP1 return, and has already tested its new 919 hybrid.

But while the 33-year-old's current McLaren deal expires at the end of this season, Button has revealed that racing at Le Mans does not appeal to him.

"Le Mans never really ticked the boxes for me," he said.

"You are racing with cars that are so much slower, in different categories, and dodging cars throughout the whole race is not something that I have ever got that excited about.

"Maybe I will when I drive one of them and drive at Le Mans, because I'd love to drive around the Le Mans circuit in a sportscar, but it's just having different categories racing together that I am not keen on.

"But each to their own as obviously a lot of people do love it."

Button insists that he does not feel he is coming close to the end of his career. But he believes that when he does stop, he will find some competitive sport to compete in.

"I want to compete," said Button. "When I do leave the sport in the future I will have another target, which a lot of people don't have.

"I think that's the biggest issue for a lot of people that do decide to leave the sport; after a year, they miss it massively.

"You have got to make sure that everything is right and while you still love the sport, you should never think about leaving it.

"I don't see the end of my career. Even in this position [struggling with McLaren in 2013], I enjoy racing.

Jochen Rindt in action at Le Mans in 1965

Only four F1 world champions have also won the Le Mans 24 Hours.

They are: Mike Hawthorn (1955), Phil Hill (1958, '61, '62), Jochen Rindt (1965, pictured) and Graham Hill (1972).
