OTHER: Giorgio Pianta 1935-2014

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 23 April 2014 | 11.07

By Gary Watkins Tuesday, April 22nd 2014, 14:29 GMT

Giorgio PiantaGiorgio Pianta, who had a long and varied career as a test driver, motorsport manager and racer, has died at the age of 78.

The Italian is perhaps best remembered as test driver, his role when he joined the Fiat Group's Abarth competitions department in the mid-1970s.

He helped develop the Fiat 131 Abarth with which Walter Rohrl took the 1980 World Rally Championship drivers' title and Fiat the manufacturers' crown

Pianta's abilities meant he was quickly promoted within the Abarth organisation and he took on more management responsibilities on the Lancia Rallye 037 and Delta S4 Group B progammes.

That led on to him being put in charge of racing activities at Alfa Romeo after it was incorporated into Fiat in 1986.

Former Lancia motorsport boss Cesare Fiorio told AUTOSPORT: "Giorgio was the guy who decided the set-up of all the rally cars.

"You always need a good driver to do that and he was a good driver, but he also had good technical solutions.

"That's why I gave him more responsibility in terms of the organisation of the service of the rally cars."

Pianta went on to have a 10-year career at Alfa Corse.

Alfa Romeo DTMHe oversaw Alfa's DTM triumph with Nicola Larini and the four-wheel-drive 155 V6 TI in 1993 and its early successes in the Super Touring category, including Gabriele Tarquini's triumph in the British Touring Car Championship in 1994.

Pianta left Alfa Romeo suddenly ahead of the end of the 1996 International Touring Car season, but continued to work for the Italian motorsport federation on a consultancy basis.

He started competing in the late 1950s at the wheel of a Fiat 1100 103 touring car and went on to enjoy success in both racing and rallying.

His career took him through, briefly, Formula 2 and Formula 3, included starts in the Le Mans 24 Hours and the Targa Florio and a stint with the Conrero Opel touring car team.

Pianta was also given occasional appearances aboard both factory and privateer Lancia Beta Montecarlo Group 5 sportscars during his time with the Italian manufacturer.

He made a one-off Formula 1 start in the British Aurora series, finishing fifth at Nogaro in 1979 at the wheel of a David Price Racing-run Williams FW06.

OTHER: AUTOSPORT involved in 'Grid' game

Tuesday, April 22nd 2014, 15:10 GMT

AUTOSPORT has been involved in the development of a motorsport game for the first time in its history, working with Codemasters Racing on its new title 'Grid Autosport'.

The game, which is released on June 24 in the USA and June 27 in Europe, has been created with the intention of taking the 'Grid' series back towards the classic 'TOCA Touring Cars' racing games.

When the BTCC was king of the racing games

The game will feature several areas of motorsport, ranging from touring cars to endurance racing, single-seaters, street racing and drift events.

Journalists from AUTOSPORT have been involved in the development of the handling model for the cars, with the emphasis being on creating a title that will appeal to racing fans as well as gamers.

"The design philosophy was to create a really focused racing game," said chief games designer James Nicholls.

"We've jettisoned anything that doesn't support the on-track competition and we've chosen a selection of cars and tracks that will give players a range of different racing experiences."

AUTOSPORT's Simon Strang added: "The TOCA games were an office favourite back in the day, so when Codemasters said they wanted to take the series back to its core fanbase we got stuck in to help.

"Many of our guys that helped with the handling are either elite former racers or active amateurs, so Codemasters were able to extract aspects of knowledge and understanding that would otherwise slip by.

"While you want the cars to feel authentic, you don't necessarily want to spend hours mastering it, and we hope that the balance is struck right for the players of the game."

F1: Raikkonen pins hopes on upgrades

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 02 April 2014 | 11.06

By Ben Anderson Tuesday, April 1st 2014, 13:43 GMT

Kimi Raikkonen is pinning his hopes of an upturn in form in Formula 1 on a set of new parts expected for this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix.

The Finn has struggled with the front end of his Ferrari in the first two races of the season.

He showed improved form through practice and qualifying for round two in Malaysia last weekend, before contact early in the race from Kevin Magnussen's McLaren ruined his chances.

Alonso not expecting Bahrain progress

Raikkonen says Ferrari is bringing new parts to his car for this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix and he is hopeful they will finally allow him to drive the F14 T in the way he would like.

"The car was very similar to the last race, but the circuit layout worked a bit better for our overall situation," said Raikkonen of his performance in Malaysia.

"For the next race we should get some new parts and be happier with the front end and drive a bit more how I want.

"The front end should feel a bit nicer after that, but we have to wait and see how we do on Friday and go from there.

"From the [pre-season] test [in Bahrain] I know there were some difficulties with the handling, but hopefully with some new parts we can sort that out and be even happier with the car than we were here.

"I think we have a pretty good understanding of what we want to do and where we want to go to make the feeling better and we can go much faster if we make that happen.

"The good thing is we did much better here [in Malaysia]. Obviously the results didn't show that but it's nice we're going in the right direction."

F1: Red Bull: sensor issues indisputable

By Jonathan Noble Tuesday, April 1st 2014, 15:36 GMT

Red Bull says that the FIA cannot dispute that there are problems with Formula 1's fuel sensors, following another failure for the team in the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Just a fortnight after Daniel Ricciardo was disqualified from the season opener in Australia for breaching F1's fuel-flow limit, the Australian's fuel sensor broke completely at Sepang on Sunday.

It meant the team had to rely on its own fuel-rail data readings to show its compliance with the regulations, although unlike in Australia this time the FIA accepted this course of action.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner said the ongoing issues his team has faced are frustrating.

"It failed prior to the race," he said. "We informed the FIA about it and we asked the FIA if we could revive it on the grid by effectively power cycling the car.

"We did that at the start of the race but it didn't come back to life. So, the sensor didn't work the whole race.

"I think it clearly demonstrates that there are issues with these sensors."

While rival teams have not encountered the kind of troubles that Red Bull is facing, Horner said that there is no explanation as to why his outfit was suffering more than others.

"I've no idea why," he said. "Obviously we have a lot of data here to go away and look at.

"Theoretically there should not be a reason, but we need to look and understand it. Everyone else is happy with the sensor apparently.

"But Toro Rosso had two failures earlier in the weekend, and there have been other issues up and down the pitlane.

"They are the only ones we know about. But it certainly isn't unique to Red Bull."

AUTOGP: Pal Kiss breaks Valencia lap record

By Peter Mills Tuesday, April 1st 2014, 21:45 GMT

Tamas Pal Kiss

Series returnee Tamas Pal Kiss broke the unofficial Auto GP lap record at Valencia on the series' opening day of collective testing of 2014.

Pal Kiss's fastest lap of 1m21.480s was two seconds under the Valencia Auto GP lap record set by recent Rapax GP2 signing Adrian Quaife-Hobbs in 2012.

Former GP3 race winner Pal Kiss is benefitting from more orderly preparations to his season than in 2013. The Hungarian was left on the sidelines through lack of finance, before finally securing a late deal to join Auto GP for round three of the championship at the Hungaroring.

Campos GP2 driver Kimiya Sato claimed second on the timesheets for MLR71, run by his former team Euronova Racing. Former grand prix driver Taki Inoue, who is assisting the 2012 Auto GP title contender, revealed that Sato is participating in the test to assist the team and its new drivers, and for the same reason will compete in Auto GP this year in parallel to GP2.

Regular 2013 frontrunner Kevin Giovesi finished third for newcomers Puma 3 M-Sport, who enjoy a technical partnership with former Durango GP2 team boss Ivone Pinton's Eurotech concern.

Belgian Sam Dejonghe ended the day top rookie and a promising fourth fastest for Virtuosi UK. Team-mate Andrea Roda, who returns to the Norfolk team for a second season, claimed third quickest in the morning session behind Super Nova International's Michela Cerruti and Sato.

Reigning champions Super Nova also fielded Markus Pommer and Gianmarco Raimondo. Former FIA Formula 2 race winner Pommer was confident of further progress on the final day of testing on Wednesday, after experiencing a small issue with his pedals during his fastest lap.

Canadian Raimondo's running was limited to a shakedown at the close of play, in preparation for a more intense programme on Wednesday.

At Euronova, Sato will hand driving duties over to former team-mate Yoshitaka Kuroda on Wednesday. Salvatore Deplano, a late addition to the test, will drive the MLR71 entry.

DTM: Audi dominates first DTM test day

Miguel Molina, Abt Audi, Hungary DTM test March 2014

Miguel Molina topped the first day of DTM testing at the Hungaroring circuit as the 2014 pre-season kicked off officially on Monday.

A total of 11 cars from the three manufacturers competing in the series were in action at the Hungarian track for the test, a month away from the first race of the season.

Molina set the benchmark with a best time of 1m37.792s in the Audi RS 5 as the manufacturer locked out the top four positions.

"It's just great to be back behind the wheel, after the long off-season," said Molina. "Audi Sport did a great job developing the new Audi RS 5 DTM: the new car feels great right from the start and the Hungaroring seems to suit it well."

Molina was followed by Jamie Green, Adrian Tambay and reigning champion Mike Rockenfeller, who finished over a second behind the Spanish driver.

Bruno Spengler was the quickest of the non-Audi driver in fifth for BMW.

Ex-Formula 1 driver Paul di Resta was fastest of the Mercedes drivers, but the Scot was down in ninth position as the Stuttgart marque finished at the bottom of the times with its three drivers.

DTM rookie Vitaly Petrov was slowest, three tenths of a second behind Briton Gary Paffett.

Maxime Martin was the quickest of the newcomers in sixth, while fellow rookie Antonio Felix da Costa was seventh in the Red Bull-backed BMW M4.

The session was shorter than scheduled because of problems with the track surface, which meant teams had to call it a day two hours earlier than planned.

Teams will be allowed an extra hour of running on both Tuesday and Wednesday to make up for the issue.

OTHER: Gonzalez gets Murphy LMP2 drive

By Gary Watkins Monday, March 31st 2014, 17:15 GMT
Rodolfo Gonzalez

Former Marussia Formula 1 Friday tester Rodolfo Gonzalez will take his first steps in sportscar racing this year with the Murphy Prototypes LMP2 squad.

The Venezuelan, who took part in nine Friday free practice sessions with Marussia last year, will drive the Anglo-Irish Murphy team's ORECA-Nissan 03 at the Le Mans 24 Hours and in the five-round European Le Mans Series.

Gonzalez will drive alongside multiple World Endurance Championship LMP2 class winner Tor Graves, who raced for the Delta-ADR P2 team in 2012-13.

Team boss Greg Murphy said: "I raced against Rodolfo in Formula Ford in the early noughties and have been after him for a while.

"I think he will do a good job, and with Tor, I think we have the makings of a line-up that could be up there."

Murphy is looking for a gold or platinum-rated to driver to race alongside Gonzalez and Graves, who are both listed as silver.

The team will try-out both GP2 race winner Nathaniel Berthon and former Indy Lights frontrunner Dillon Battistini at the official ELMS test, which starts at Paul Ricard on Tuesday.

Karun Chandhok, who raced for Murphy at Le Mans last year, will also take part in the test with the team and is in the frame for a drive at the 24 Hours.

Greaves Motorsport is also testing some newcomers at Ricard in its pair of Zytek-Nissan Z11SNs.

IMSA Lights racer Matt McMurry, son of US sportscar stalwart Chris, will take part in the test after being signed up as part of the driver development programme launched by Dyson Racing, whose boss Chris Dyson is driving for Greaves in the ELMS this season.

Sixteen-year-old McMurry is bidding to become eclipse Ricardo Rodriguez's record as the youngest driver to take part in the 24 Hours at Le Mans.

Radical drivers Tony Wells and James Littlejohn will also drive for Greaves at Ricard.

AUTOGP: Fourteen drivers for Auto GP test

By Peter Mills Monday, March 31st 2014, 19:26 GMT

Michela Cerruti, Super Nova, Vallelunga Auto GP test, November 2013

Auto GP has secured a field of 14 cars for its first 2014 pre-season test at Valencia on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Reigning champion team Super Nova will run Canadian Gianmarco Raimondo and German Markus Pommer alongside its already confirmed 2014 signing Michela Cerruti at the test.

Prior to participating in four GP2 races for Trident last year, Raimondo was runner-up in the 2012 European Formula 3 Open championship.

Sometime Formula 2 man Pommer, who had secured a GP3 seat with Russian Time before the team's restructuring forced a change of plan, returns to single-seaters after contesting last year's Porsche Supercup.

Fellow Norfolk team Virtuosi UK will field cars for Slovakian Richard Gonda and Belgian Sam Dejonghe, who starred in the Indian-based MRF series over the close season.

Andrea Roda has agreed terms with Virtuosi to continue for a second season in the category, and the Italian is also set to test.

Zele Racing completed its roster of drivers earlier than several of its competitors. Series returnees Tamas Pal Kiss and race winner Sergio Campana are set to complete the season, however, the latter will miss Tuesday's Valencia test owing to clashing commitment. The Italian's place is to be filled by compatriot Antonio Spavone.

Campana's fellow 2013 Auto GP title contender Kimiya Sato will sample MLR71 by Euronova machinery alongside team owner Michele La Rosa.

Sato returns to the Auto GP paddock after competitive showings in recent GP2 tests for Campos, which has signed him for the 2014 season.

Gentleman racer Giuseppe Cipriani's Ibiza Racing Team will field Turin-based Auto GP regular Francesco Dracone.

Series newcomer Puma 3 M-Sport's freshly revealed line-up of Kevin Giovesi and Loris Spinelli complete the testing entries.
