F1: Sir Jack Brabham dies aged 88

Monday, May 19th 2014, 01:27 GMT

Jack Brabham

Sir Jack Brabham, the three-time Formula 1 world champion, has died at the age of 88.

A statement from the Brabham family said that the Australian passed away peacefully at his home on the Gold Coast on Monday morning.

Brabham was the first man to win an F1 title in a car of his own making, as he established the Brabham team in the early 1960s after winning his first two F1 titles with Cooper.

It was with Cooper that he had made his F1 debut in 1955, having begun his career in midget racing and hillclimbs in Australia at the start of the decade.

After initially focusing on the team's sportscar and Formula 2 efforts around sporadic grand prix outings, he became a full-time F1 driver in 1958.

His maiden victory came in Monaco at the start of the following season, and kicked off two ultra-successful years that brought him both the 1959 and '60 world championship titles.

He created the Brabham team for 1962, initially running a Lotus while the first of his design partner Ron Tauranac's creations was completed.

It would be his initial team-mate Dan Gurney who took the Brabham team's first wins, but in 1966 a run of four mid-season victories set Brabham up for his third and final F1 crown, this time in his own car - a so far unique achievement. The Brabham team also won constructors' titles in both 1966 and '67.

Brabham retired at the end of the 1970 season, which he had begun with a 14th and final GP win at Kyalami, selling the team at the same time.

While his eponymous squad went on to further title successes with Nelson Piquet under Bernie Ecclestone's ownership, Brabham was able to watch his three sons Geoff, Gary and David embark on highly successful motorsport careers in their own right.

Grandsons Matthew and Sam have also commenced single-seater racing careers in recent seasons.

"It's a very sad day for all of us," said David Brabham. "My father passed away peacefully at home at the age of 88 this morning.

"He lived an incredible life, achieving more than anyone would ever dream of and he will continue to live on through the astounding legacy he leaves behind."

A full obituary will follow and further coverage of Sir Jack Brabham's life and career will follow

F3: Powell joins seven-car British F3 field

Written By kolimtiga on Jumat, 02 Mei 2014 | 11.06

By Marcus Simmons Thursday, May 1st 2014, 16:51 GMT

Alice Powell

Ex-GP3 racer Alice Powell will contest the opening British Formula 3 round at Rockingham this weekend, bringing the field up to just seven cars.

The 21-year-old will join China's Peter Li Zhi Cong in Carlin's line-up of Dallara-Volkswagen F308s.

Powell raced in the lower-level F3 Cup series last year, in which she finished runner-up.

She will have to miss qualifying as she is competing in a trial for the Team GB skeleton team.

"As always you wait for something to come along and then two buses come at once!" said Powell.

"It will be a hectic weekend but I'm really excited. I've always wanted to race in British Formula 3 ever since I did Formula Renault, so to get the opportunity to do it now and with the reigning champions is really good."

Powell's one-off deal means she completes a disappointing field, consisting of Powell and Li (Carlin), Martin Cao, Matt Rao and Sam MacLeod (all Fortec Motorsport), and Andy Chang and Camren Kaminsky (both Double R Racing).

This represents a difficult start for the refocused British F3, after teams elected to base the series on current and 2008-11 chassis, all powered by old-spec engines.

They hoped to admit pre-2008 cars, and also allow those using engines conforming to the new FIA regulations but without scoring points.

But an FIA letter, received by the MSA, British motorsport's governing body, on March 7, stated that cars conforming to current chassis and engine regulations 'should form the basis of the championship', while allowing that 'a concession for 2014 and 2015 will be given to ASNs that wish to also include non-current cars on their grids, provided all cars comply with the relevant FIA regulations of the day'.

The letter also said that 'only cars from the 2008 and 2012 generations may be used'.

It stated that this was a result of decisions made at the World Motor Sport Council on December 4.

While it removes any prospect of pre-2008 cars appearing in British F3 races, it opens up the possibility of F3 European Championship-spec cars competing in races and scoring points - but the Rockingham opener clashes with a European round at Hockenheim.

AUTOSPORT SAYS...

What a shame that such a small field has been attracted for the British F3 opener at Rockingham.

British F3 media day Donington

Following one week on from the German F3 kick-off at Oschersleben - which attracted a mere 10 cars - it appears that the category at a national level is on the ropes.

But it won't necessarily stay like this all season. Alex Lynn and Harry Tincknell are planning cameo returns at Thruxton, Performance Racing is hoping to get drivers, and Double R Racing's plans for a third car at Rockingham only took a dive because the team couldn't get an engine in time.

It's going to be an up-and-down year, but hopefully venues such as Silverstone and Spa can pull in more competitors.

What hasn't helped is the changing guidelines on what is or isn't eligible for an F3 competition.

You can soon read an in-depth AUTOSPORT interview with FIA Single Seater Commission president Gerhard Berger.

The Austrian is adamant that the rules on new engines having to be eligible for points, and pre-2008 cars being barred (on safety grounds) were discussed during 2013 Commission meetings - at which an MSA representative was present - in the lead-up to the World Council decision in December.

Breakdown of communication? Whatever. Suffice to say, a few months ago British F3 teams would likely have kicked up a fuss about trying to find an equalising measure for the new engines against the old (there is a 1.5-2-second difference on the Silverstone GP circuit), but now they'll be welcoming any European-spec interlopers with open arms to get the numbers up.

After all, the odd race for a driver with a new-spec engine isn't going to overly affect the overall championship.

INDY: Mann reunites with Coyne for Indy 500

By Mark Glendenning Thursday, May 1st 2014, 20:42 GMT

Pippa Mann Indy 500 2013

Pippa Mann will reunite with Dale Coyne Racing to drive the team's third entry in this month's Indianapolis 500.

The Brit, who made four starts with DCR last year, will pilot the team's #63 car, and will carry an all-pink helmet and car livery in recognition of leading breast cancer organisation Susan G. Komen.

Her entry will be engineered by Brandon Fry, who previously worked with Mann during her Indy debut in 2011.

"Dale Coyne Racing has an amazing crew coming on board to staff the #63 car, and I can't thank Dale and the team enough for their support of this project, and for all the hard work they have also put into this behind the scenes," said Mann.

"We will be out there not only racing for position, and competing in a classic racing sense against our competitors on track, but we will also be out there racing for the cure."

Mann has not raced since her outing with Coyne at Fontana last year.

Her best result at Indy was a 20th in 2011 with Conquest, while her highest finish from her six IndyCar starts was 15th at Pocono last July.

F1: Force India revelling in McLaren plight

By Ben Anderson Thursday, May 1st 2014, 15:47 GMT
Force India and McLaren, Chinese GP 2014, Shanghai

Force India is revelling in beating ex-technical partner McLaren in this season's Formula 1 constructors' title race, according to deputy team principal Bob Fernley.

Vijay Mallya's squad led McLaren for the first half of last year's battle, until its competitiveness faded following Pirelli's decision to tweak its tyre compounds in the face of repeated blowouts.

Force India currently lies third in the 2014 constructors' championship, 11 points ahead of McLaren, which has failed to score in the last two races.

Fernley reckons it will be difficult for Force India to raise its level to that of frontrunner Mercedes, or Red Bull, but he is hopeful the Silverstone-based outfit can continue to fight Ferrari and remain ahead of McLaren across the rest of the campaign.

"Lotus are struggling at the minute and are not where they want to be and McLaren would be our next competitor and they're struggling too. I'm not in the slightest bit sad about that - may their problems not be too insignificant!" Fernley told AUTOSPORT.

"It would be hard for us to compete with Red Bull and Mercedes. It's not going to be easy for us to [continue to] compete with Ferrari, but for as long as we can, we will."

Nico Hulkenberg fought Ferrari's Fernando Alonso in each of the first two races and Fernley said this represented a "major step" for Force India, despite the fact Hulkenberg finished a distant sixth to Alonso's third in China.

"If you look at our historical results we tend to be a bit up and down, whereas now we're absolutely consistent across the circuits," Fernley added.

"If you look at Ferrari, they're probably the exact opposite to us: Bahrain was an Achilles' heel for them and in China they fit in much better.

"It's just the DNA of the designs in some cases.

"If you look at Australia and Malaysia, Nico and Fernando were battling all the way through, so you get that bit in the middle as well.

"We come out of this [early part of the season] feeling quite pleased."

F1: Dennis: Senna legend not due to death

Written By kolimtiga on Kamis, 01 Mei 2014 | 11.07

By Jonathan Noble Wednesday, April 30th 2014, 15:56 GMT

Ayrton Senna, McLaren, British GP 1988

Perceptions of Ayrton Senna as arguably Formula 1's greatest driver are not just the result of his life being cut short in its prime, says his former boss Ron Dennis.

The Brazilian's status has continued to grow ever since he was killed at Imola in 1994, with the F1 world's outpouring of emotion on the 20th anniversary of that weekend showing how highly he is still regarded.

But while Senna's death has helped immortalise his legend, Dennis says that the three-time world champion's talent and human qualities are just as important in explaining why he is still worshipped.

When asked why he believed so many people consider Senna to have been the greatest, Dennis said: "I think because he was so good for all the period he was on the planet.

"I can see no positives in the fact that he had an accident and lost his life, but what you didn't see is any decline.

"You remember he was just unbelievably competitive and then boom, he is not there. So what do you remember?

"I have never thought, 'I wonder what Ayrton would look like if he was here today.'

"But above all, he was great. He had good human values. He was very principled.

"I remember of course the race in Suzuka [in 1990], where he and [Alain] Prost collided at the first corner.

"I looked at all the traces, the brake and the throttle pedals, and you didn't need to be Einstein to work out what happened. He came back to the pits and I said, 'I am disappointed in you'.

"He got it. He didn't have to say any more. It was one of his rare moments of weakness."

This week's AUTOSPORT magazine - available online and in shops from Thursday May 1 - is an Imola 1994 special, commemorating 20 years since the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger:

FE: Formula E car set to meet schedule

Wednesday, April 30th 2014, 16:13 GMT

Formula E Ho Ping Tung

The first batch of Formula E's Spark-Renault cars is on target to be delivered to teams on May 15.

The 10 teams that have signed up for the FIA's new electric single-seater championship will each receive their first Spark-Renault SRT_01E in just over a fortnight, with official testing beginning on July 3-4 at the series' Donington Park base.

Frederic Vasseur, head of the Spark firm that has designed the car for the initial series, confirmed that the scheduled delivery date of May 15 would be met.

"I think we'll work over the weekend for sure, but we'll be OK," he told AUTOSPORT.

The final test of the initial programme before teams become involved took place last week at Monteblanco in Spain, where Ho-Pin Tung drove alongside Jonathan Cochet and Antoine Leclerc.

Vasseur said testing had gone extremely smoothly, with an upgraded version of the car first tested by ex-Formula 1 driver Jarno Trulli showing good pace.

"We've done something like 4000kms of testing, which is something like three seasons of the Formula E championship, with no big issues," he said.

"We took a big step forward in the performance of the battery when Trulli tested the car with version two of the engine and battery.

"It's an exciting challenge and all the partners around the table have been really motivated by the project."

F1: Azerbaijan claims 2016 F1 deal

By Jonathan Noble and Gary Watkins Wednesday, April 30th 2014, 16:15 GMT
Baku

Azerbaijan claims that it has signed a deal that will result in it hosting Formula 1's European Grand Prix in 2016.

The country's capital Baku has been linked with F1 for several months, but local political chiefs now suggest a contract has been agreed with Bernie Ecclestone to hold a street race in two years' time, a year after the former Soviet republic hosts the inaugural European Games.

Azad Rahimov, Azerbaijan's Minister of Youth and Sports, was quoted as saying by the Inside the Games website that an official announcement confirming the race will be made imminently.

"We have signed the deal with Bernie Ecclestone and will announce it officially with an event in Baku shortly," he said.

Baku has hosted Azerbaijan's first international motor races over the past two years: the non-championship Baku City Challenge took place on a 1.33-mile street circuit in 2012 and last year it held the FIA GT Series finale on a new 2.72-mile layout.

The city is scheduled to host the final round of this year's Blancpain Sprint Series, which takes over from FIA GTs, this November.

It has yet to emerge whether the grand prix would run on the streets of Baku or on an all-new F1 facility near the city.

AUTOSPORT SAYS...
Gary Watkins, sportscar correspondent
@gazzasportscars

Baku would need to come up with a completely new circuit for Formula 1.

Neither of the tracks laid out on the streets of the Azerbaijan capital for its end-of-season GT races in 2012 and '13 could form the basis of an F1 venue.

The point-and-squirt circuit used in year was under a mile and a half in length and offered little challenge, while last season's 2.72-mile track was only homologated to FIA grade 3 and would be unsuitable for anything much faster than a GT3 car.
