NASCAR: NASCAR team owner Donlavey dies

By Mark Glendenning Tuesday, June 10th 2014, 15:45 GMT

Long-time NASCAR team owner Junie Donlavey died on Monday after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 90 years old.

Donlavey fielded cars for 45 seasons, starting out as an owner-driver in 1950 before stepping back to become a full-time entrant.

Donlavey Racing went on to contest a total of 863 races with a roster of drivers that included Joe Weatherly, Tiny Lund, Fred Lorenzen, David Pearson, Dick Trickle and Benny Parsons, although his only win came at the hands of Jody Ridley at Dover in 1981.

If the team was rarely a threat at the front, it developed a reputation as a hothouse for young talent, with Ridley, Ken Schrader and Bill Dennis all winning rookie of the year honours while driving its #90 entry.

Nicknamed 'Chief' by his colleagues in the paddock, Donlavey was a widely respected figure within the sport. A NASCAR statement described him as "a treasure, a man who personified NASCAR's proud past."

WEC: Buemi puts Toyota on top on test day

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 02 Juni 2014 | 11.07

By Gary Watkins Sunday, June 1st 2014, 16:44 GMT

Toyota backed up its status as pre-event favourites for the Le Mans 24 Hours by finishing one-two in the test day.

Sebastien Buemi topped the times with a 3m23.014s lap in the #8 TS040 HYBRID set early in the afternoon session, while Kazuki Nakajima put in a lap that was one and a half tenths slower in the #7 entry right at the end of the test.

Buemi said: "To have the fastest lap of the day doesn't mean a lot, but it does mean we are heading in the right direction.

"We can now analyse all the data and try to be quicker for race week."

Two of the three Audi R18 e-tron quattros took third and fourth spots in the afternoon.

Marco Bonanomi's morning best of 3m23.799s in the #3 car stood as the fastest Audi time of the day.

Loic Duval was seven tenths behind in the #1 Audi in the latter session.

Porsche took fifth place overall with Neel Jani in the #14 car on a 3m24.692s.

Roman Rusinov topped the LMP2 class in the OAK Racing-run G-Drive Morgan-Nissan, going half a second quicker than Karun Chandhok in the Murphy ORECA-Nissan right at the end of the day.

GTE Pro honours went to Frederic Makowiecki with a 3m57.260s set aboard his factory Porsche 911 RSR.

That eclipsed Giancarlo Fisichella's best in the fastest of the AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italias by two tenths of a second.

The top two in GTE Pro were split by the best Am car, the 8Star Ferrari driven by Paolo Ruberti.

NASCAR: Johnson wins second consecutive race

Sunday, June 1st 2014, 21:32 GMT

Jimmie Johnson scored his second NASCAR Sprint Cup victory in as many weeks at Dover, holding off Brad Keselowski in a late-race restart.

Hendrick Chevrolet star Johnson dominated the second half of the race, having wrested the lead from Matt Kenseth's Joe Gibbs-run Toyota on lap 180.

Clint Bowyer attempted a bold two-tyre strategy at the final round of pitstops to briefly grab the lead, but Johnson dispatched him within seconds of the restart and was never again headed.

A final yellow flag, due to Casey Mears' tyre falling to pieces inside the last 10 laps, meant a four-lap shoot-out to the finish, but Johnson kept his cool once more.

Poleman Brad Keselowski finished second in his Penske Ford, having closed the gap to Johnson in the penultimate stint, but he was unable to do anything about the six-time champion in the final reckoning.

Kenseth finished third, escaping a hairy moment when Bowyer got into the back of him at the final restart.

Denny Hamlin finished fifth, despite an early pitlane speeding penalty.

The race was red flagged twice, once to clean debris from a crash involving Roush-Fenway duo Greg Biffle and Ricky Stenhouse Jr, which was started by AJ Allmendinger, and a second time when the track came apart at Turn 2.

Ryan Newman tore up part of the concrete race surface into the path of Jamie McMurray, whose car hit the wall after he'd slammed into the debris.

The track required repairing, which meant a lengthy delay, but no further issues were encountered after the restart.

INDY: Castroneves leads Penske one-two

By Mark Glendenning Sunday, June 1st 2014, 22:10 GMT

Helio Castroneves led Will Power across the line for a Penske 1-2 in the second race of the weekend's IndyCar double-header on the Belle Isle street circuit in Detroit.

As was the case on Saturday, the race featured an array of overlapping strategies, but Castroneves followed a relatively straightforward one of starting on red tyres and cycling through harder blacks for the rest of the race to put himself into position for the win.

A long stint under greens during the second half of the race allowed the Brazilian to open a lead of 13 seconds, although that was erased by a string of caution periods, the first caused by Sebastien Bourdais hitting the wall, and the second by polesitter Takuma Sato being spun into the barrier by Marco Andretti.

Those allowed Power to close up on his team-mate, but Castroneves nailed both restarts and crossed the line with a 1.6s advantage.

"[Finishing second in] the Indy 500 just made us hungrier," said Castroneves.

"We want this championship so bad, and to win here where I won for the first time is awesome.

"The car was just so fast. I missed an opportunity yesterday, the strategy just didn't work for us but today was perfect."

Power did well to be in contention at all considering that he was forced to serve a drive-through penalty early on for unavoidable contact.

It was a fair punishment - he lunged to the inside of Simon Pagenaud at Turn 3, then decided to ride the kerb and try to pass Josef Newgarden as well.

It didn't work, and the resultant contact sent Newgarden spinning into the path of Graham Rahal, who in turn was rear-ended by Justin Wilson.

The Australian did not push his team-mate hard on the final restarts, and said that he was being deliberately conservative.

"It was a fantastic weekend," he said.

"I have a feeling we could have won it if we didn't have the drive-through but I'll definitely take second.

"I wasn't going to attack Helio hard - a 1-2 for Roger [Penske] is better than two in the wall."

The result was made even better for Penske by the fact that it moved Power and Castroneves into first and second in the points table; a situation helped further by Ryan Hunter-Reay having another miserable day that began with a qualifying crash and ended with an electrical failure.

Charlie Kimball did a superb job to drive from 20th to third, the Ganassi driver surviving close encounters with team-mate Scott Dixon and James Hinchcliffe in the final laps.

"It's a great day, to come back from a real disappointing qualifying this morning to be third and have all four Ganassi cars in the top 10," he said.

"I knew we had a fast car; we just had to put the hammer down in clean air and try to move forward.

"When I had clean air, I had the car to make up the positions."

Results - 70 laps: Pos Driver Team/Engine Time/Gap 1. NAT: Spectators killed on Jim Clark Rally

Written By kolimtiga on Minggu, 01 Juni 2014 | 11.06

By David Evans Saturday, May 31st 2014, 19:19 GMT

Three spectators have been killed in an accident on the Jim Clark Rally in Scotland.

The crash happened on the Swinton stage, near Coldstream in the Scottish Borders, earlier this afternoon.

A source close to the rally has told AUTOSPORT three spectators are known to have died, with Police Scotland subsequently confirming that this was the case. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two more spectators have been taken from the scene by air ambulance. One of them is in a critical condition in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The event was stopped following the crash, which happened two stages from the finish, and has now been cancelled.

The Jim Clark was round two of the 2014 British Rally Championship.

The police are also investigating an earlier incident on the rally in which five spectators were injured. Four were treated at the scene of the crash, but a fifth is in a serious condition in hospital.

British motorsport's governing body the Motor Sports Association has issued a statement expressing its condolences and promising a comprehensive investigation into the accidents.

"The Motor Sports Association and everyone in the motorsport community is devastated by the terrible events this afternoon on the Jim Clark Rally," it said.

"The families and friends of those who have lost their lives and of those who have been injured are in all our thoughts as they face such an awful situation.

"Police Scotland are now in control of all aspects of the investigations into the two accidents and both the police and hospital authorities will issue further bulletins when they can. Everyone waits anxiously for some better news of those who have been injured.

"As with any serious incident, today's accidents will also be subject to full enquiries by the MSA to ensure that any lessons are learned to assist in the constant drive to provide the highest possible safety standards at all motorsport events."

USC: Taylors win in wild USC finish

By Mark Glendenning Saturday, May 31st 2014, 18:16 GMT

Wayne Taylor Corvette, Detroit USC 2014

Ricky and Jordan Taylor survived a wild finish to win the United SportsCar race on the streets of Detroit's Belle Isle.

The Wayne Taylor Racing pair narrowly beat Spirit of Daytona's Richard Westbrook and Michael Valiante for a Corvette DP 1-2 on home soil.

Until the final lap it was shaping up to be a Corvette 1-2-3 and Westbrook was not in the picture at all.

Taylor was leading Joao Barbosa, but what had been a three-second lead a few laps earlier had been whittled down to nothing, and Barbosa appeared to still have enough tyres left to cause Taylor some problems.

A look to the outside with two laps to go amounted to little more than a near-miss with the wall, but the next time around he made the same move, following it up by ducking to Taylor's inside at Turn 3.

This time he got a run, and the pair made contact as they headed towards Turn 4 before Barbosa shook his rival off.

At first glance it appeared that Taylor had come off the worse, however that illusion was shattered when Barbosa's left-rear tyre exploded a couple of corners later.

Taylor swept back into the lead, but in the chaos Westbrook had closed in and was right on his tail. Taylor managed to keep him at bay for the final couple of corners, but he will be grateful that the race was not one lap longer.

Barbosa made no effort to hide his feelings.

"I'm very disappointed," he said. "We had a strong car and the car was very good. I tried to go by Ricky and he tried to put me into the wall. The next time it's going to be him."

Oliver Pla was third, albeit some distance back, in the OAK Morgan that he shared with Gustavo Yacaman, who won at this track two years ago in Indy Lights.

The fight for GTD class honours was no less fraught, with a series of minor incidents culminating in a last-lap fracas in which frontrunner Spencer Pumpelly was knocked off the track while fighting Townsend Bell.

The class win went to Scuderia Corsa Ferrari duo Alessandro Balzan and Jeff Westphal.

INDY: Power beats Rahal to Detroit victory

By Mark Glendenning Saturday, May 31st 2014, 22:38 GMT

Will Power leads Graham Rahal over the line, Detroit IndyCar 2014

Will Power triumphed in a thrilling first race in this weekend's IndyCar double-header in Detroit.

A combination of a scrambled grid and a succession of yellows made for almost as many strategies as there were drivers during the first half, but towards the end it boiled down to a straight fight between Power and Graham Rahal.

Power had the track position, but Rahal had a car that had been working well all afternoon and it took a fairly robust block from the Australian to retain the lead at the final restart.

With half a dozen laps remaining Power's lead had been stripped from one second to around 0.6s, and Rahal was clamped squarely to his rear over the final two laps.

But he was never able to find a way around, and Power went on to cross the line just 0.3s ahead, delivering hometown wins to both team owner (and race promoter) Roger Penske and engine supplier Chevrolet.

"Graham made it very difficult," said Power, who had struggled badly in qualifying and started from 16th.

"He never gave up. Every time I tried to relax he was straight back at me."

Power's road to victory included the addition of another chapter to his growing rivalry with Simon Pagenaud.

The pair touched on lap five when a wheel-to-wheel scrap culminated in Pagenaud making what he later admitted was "probably an optimistic move" to Power's inside and being pancaked into the wall. The consequent suspension damage ended his afternoon.

Meanwhile, Rahal was disappointed to fall just short of the win while being simultaneously pleased to finally get a good result on the board after a poor start to the year for family team Rahal Letterman Lanigan.

"I feel like we got a monkey off our back today," he said. "I knew I only had one real opportunity and that was on the restart and [Will] blocked me - which was fair enough; I would have done the same thing."

Ganassi's Tony Kanaan was on the same strategy at the end and completed the podium, although he had no answer to the pace of Power and Rahal and spent the final laps making sure that he kept ahead of Justin Wilson.

Polesitter Helio Castroneves rounded out the top five; the Brazilian fast whenever he was in front, but ultimately being thwarted by the timing of the yellows.

Accidents and other mishaps derailed several other potential contenders. Jack Hawksworth was looking very strong during the opening stint, running comfortably in second before his brake rotor exploded right before his first stop. He eventually rejoined four laps down, only to become involved in a last-lap incident with Mikhail Aleshin.

Indeed, the Russian's afternoon had been almost as eventful. He became the first driver from his country to lead an IndyCar race when he took a stint at the front during the stops, only to be penalised for blocking Takuma Sato, who was four laps down. Earlier, he had survived a brief clash with James Hinchcliffe.

Mike Conway was running in the top four for Ed Carpenter Racing when he made a mistake and clouted the wall, and later, Josef Newgarden did the same thing to cost himself a chance at a top 10 finish.

It was a miserable afternoon for Indianapolis 500 winner and championship leader Ryan Hunter-Reay, who started from the last row after an accident in qualifying, made little impression during the race, and then lost the rear of his car and crashed into the wall on the final lap.
