F1: Gary Anderson given honorary degree

Written By kolimtiga on Rabu, 02 Juli 2014 | 11.06

By Edd Straw Tuesday, July 1st 2014, 14:46 GMT

Gary Anderson receives honorary degree

AUTOSPORT's technical expert, Gary Anderson, has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Ulster.

Anderson was made an honorary doctor of science in a graduation ceremony at the university's Coleraine Campus on Tuesday.

The doctorate is in recognition of his achievements in motorsport, which make him a role model for students graduating from the university.

Ask Gary Anderson

Although Anderson embarked on a long and distinguished career in motorsport without any formal qualifications, producing racewinning cars for both Jordan and Stewart, he is quick to stress the importance of education.

"When I was young, education was not very high on my to-do list and at Coleraine Secondary School, to be honest my aim was to leave there as soon as possible," Anderson told AUTOSPORT.

"So it was a great honour to go back to my home town to receive this honorary degree from the University of Ulster.

"In the late 1960s/early 1970s, it was difficult to find work in Northern Ireland and I decided to move to England.

"From leaving school at 15 to starting work for Bernie Ecclestone at Brabham at 22 I had nine different jobs, from a building site dump truck driver to a mechanic on Massey Ferguson tractors

"I have experienced most things but as they say when you get involved in a job that you love you never work again. In a way that's what happened to me but I had to work hard.

"I questioned and listened to everything and in motorsport I had some great tutors, Bob Dance, Gordon Murray and Gordon Coppuck are three that I would like to mention.

"It was through people like this and my determination that I got the opportunities that I did.

"When I moved into the design side of things I was employing people to work for me with vastly higher qualifications than I had.

"I believe that combining education and experience and getting them to work together is a stronger combination than either individually."

As well as his time at Jordan and Stewart/Jaguar as technical director, Anderson has worked for Brabham, McLaren and Ensign in F1.

FE: Super Nova to run TrulliGP

By Gary Watkins Tuesday, July 1st 2014, 15:06 GMT

Former grand prix driver Jarno Trulli's new Formula E team will be run by successful single-seater squad Super Nova.

TrulliGP has signed up Super Nova, which won four Formula 3000 drivers' titles in the 1990s and early 2000s, to run its Spark-Renault SRT_01Es in the wake of the official announcement of the team last month.

Trulli, whose team-mate in the inaugural season of the Formula E Championship will be Michela Cerruti, told AUTOSPORT: "We have reached an agreement with [team bosses] David and John Sears at Super Nova and I am very pleased because I rate the team very highly.

"They are very serious people with a high level of experience, so we couldn't have found a better partner."

David Sears added: "We wanted to be involved with Formula E from the beginning, so we are very pleased and excited about this.

"Running a team commercially is incredibly difficult so this is exactly what we've needed since our sponsor went bust on us and we had to shut up shop in GP2."

Super Nova, which was also a frontrunner in GP2 before dropping out of the series ahead of the 2012 season, joins fellow stalwart British race team Carlin, which is running the Mahindra Racing entries, on the Formula E grid.

Norfolk-based Super Nova has raced in Auto GP since leaving GP2, winning the drivers' title in 2012-13.

Ex-Lotus motorsport director Claudio Berro, who formerly ran GT racing programmes for Maserati and Ferrari, is no longer involved with the team.

SUPER NOVA'S TITLES

1995 Formula 3000 Vincenzo Sospiri
1997 Formula 3000 Ricardo Zonta
1998 Formula 3000 Juan Pablo Montoya
2002 Formula 3000 Sebastien Bourdais
2006-07 A1GP Team Germany
2012 Auto GP Adrian Quaife-Hobbs
2013 Auto GP Vittorio Ghirelli

WRC: Poland boss hits back at critics

By David Evans Tuesday, July 1st 2014, 16:03 GMT

Robert Kubica, Rally Poland 2014

Rally Poland boss Jaroslaw Noworol has spoken out against criticism of the itinerary for his World Rally Championship event last week.

The seventh round of the WRC was slammed by drivers and team principals for 18-hour days and cancelled stages, but Noworol pointed to the championship's own sporting and commercial restrictions as the reason for the negativity.

The rally's opening day proper was cut short with SS5 trimmed due to the road surface before the start.

Stages seven and eight were subsequently canned after one run, when the sandy roads were left with foot-deep ruts, meaning 37 of the proposed 55 Lithuanian miles were lost.

Citroen driver Kris Meeke said: "What pisses me off is the people who went to inspect the stages in Lithuania; what did they do? Go for a night's holiday?

"All they needed to do was tap a metal rod into the ground to know it wasn't suitable, but they ruined it for us, the spectators and for the people of Lithuania."

Noworol said: "We have an agreement with the FIA and with the promoter that our rally should be in two countries - in Lithuania and Poland - and we did everything that was in the agreement.

"The Lithuanians were responsible for the time in their country. They proposed stages to us, but the distance was too big."

Events are encouraged to ensure at least 25 per cent of their total route mileage is competitive; Poland was 21 per cent, which is why Lithuanian stages had to be as close as possible to the border.

Noworol said the use of Lithuanian stages would be discussed by the organisers with the FIA and WRC Promoter shortly after that rally - they are not expected to return next year.

WRC Promoter's Oliver Ciesla said: "When we do these things we do them to bring the rally to additional fans.

"If it's worthwhile, we accept the extra costs and the extra efforts. It is up for discussion; it has to be re-evaluated."

There was uniform dislike for what Volkswagen team principal Jost Capito labeled a "crap" itinerary, but Noworol said this was a byproduct of the day in Lithuania.

"I know how the teams felt, we also had to work these hours," said Noworol.

"If Rally Poland is only in Poland, this will be changed."

FE: Formula E picks Battersea for UK race

Written By kolimtiga on Selasa, 01 Juli 2014 | 11.06

By Gary Watkins and Glenn Freeman Monday, June 30th 2014, 16:00 GMT

Formula E London launch

Formula E has chosen London's Battersea Park as its preferred venue for the finale to its inaugural season.

London was one of the cities originally chosen from 23 applicants in 2013 to host a race, and AUTOSPORT reported earlier this year that Battersea was the likely venue for the race.

That was confirmed as the "chosen location" for the June 27 race at the championship's launch event in London (pictured) on Monday evening.

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said the event "is set to provide an awesome addition to the capital's sporting calendar.

"Battersea, which is already booming with the buzz of regeneration, will be alive with the excitement that this new, world-class event will no doubt spark.

"Hosting the championship final of this all-electric race is a fantastic feather in our city's sporting cap.

"It shows that there is great confidence in London's ability to stage the biggest and the best global sporting events."

HURDLES TO OVERCOME

Other venues in London had been evaluated, including the Olympic Park, Hyde Park and a venue around Wembley Stadium.

The Battersea Park event is not definite yet, with a spokesman for Wandsworth Borough Council confirming to AUTOSPORT that a race had not been signed off.

"We need to look at it very carefully," said the spokesman, "and first of all to speak to amenity groups and local residents.

"We are not in a position to say yes or no at this stage."

F1: Sutil doesn't regret Sauber move

By Ben Anderson Monday, June 30th 2014, 15:43 GMT

Adrian Sutil, Sauber, Australian GP 2014, Melbourne

Adrian Sutil has no regrets about leaving the Force India Formula 1 team for Sauber, despite the contrasting fortunes of the two squads so far this season.

Force India lies fourth in the F1 constructors' championship, after scoring points in every race so far this year, while Sutil's new team Sauber has yet to register on the scoreboard after eight grands prix.

The Swiss squad has struggled with chassis and engine issues on the C33, but Sutil is happy to see his old team doing well and is hopeful Sauber can perform just as strongly once it gets on top of its problems.

"I had wonderful years with Force India, and I needed a change and I went to Sauber," Sutil said, when asked by AUTOSPORT if he was frustrated to see Force India do so well while Sauber struggles.

"So this chapter is done for me and I'm happy to see them be successful, and I did a lot of work so maybe this is [why they have] what they have right now.

"I'm not thinking back, [and] that it's a shame I'm not there. It's OK they have a good result, I am happy for them.

"Life goes on - new team, new challenge, no regrets. It would be great to do as well as Force India with this team in the future."

FE: Tweaks to Formula E 'Fan Boost' plan

Monday, June 30th 2014, 16:02 GMT

Formula E London launch

Formula E has made changes to its proposed 'Fan Boost' system, which will allow a public vote to determine which drivers are given extra power to deploy during a race.

At the championship's launch event in London on Monday it was revealed that the power boost available has been increased to 90hp.

The online fan vote, which will close shortly before the start of a race, will allow the three most popular drivers to receive one boost each, which will increase the power of the car from 133kw (180bhp) to 200kw (270bhp).

On the subject of Formula E's official launch, the series' CEO Alejandro Agag said: "As our first race draws closer, it's fantastic to see the new era of motorsport come to life.

"Next month will see our first [public] test days where we already have 3000 members of the public registered to come and see, but also hear what we believe will be the future of motorsport.

"We are very excited about the start of the season and pleased to be taking further steps forward."
