SHOW: Turkington joins BTCC stars at ASI

Tuesday, December 2nd 2014, 16:53 GMT

Colin Turkington, BTCC 2014

Two-time British Touring Car champion Colin Turkington is the latest tin-top star to confirm his attendance at next year's AUTOSPORT International show in Birmingham.

Turkington, who won his second BTCC crown in 2014, joins fellow champions Matt Neal, Andrew Jordan and Gordon Shedden on the list of stars attending the show from January 8-11.

"Winning the British Touring Car Championship for a second time was the result of a lot of hard work by the entire West Surrey Racing team; that it all came together was incredibly satisfying," Turkington said.

"We received great support from passionate BTCC fans all year, but the reception to winning the title has been amazing.

"It will be great to see everyone and reflect at AUTOSPORT International in January, starting what will hopefully be another successful year."

The show's regular BTCC display will also return in 2015, hosting team launches, a fleet of cars, driver interviews and autograph sessions.

F1: Caterham: Abu Dhabi gave team hope

By Jonathan Noble Monday, December 1st 2014, 15:44 GMT

Caterham's administrator says the decision to race in the season finale in Abu Dhabi was essential to give it a chance of Formula 1 survival.

While rival Marussia has closed down, with its assets due to be sold off at auction later this month, Caterham is still in talks with potential purchasers.

And although there is no guarantee a deal can be reached, acting team principal Finbarr O'Connell says that the profile boost Caterham got from racing in Abu Dhabi delivered a boost to its hopes of finding a buyer.

"We are talking to a very serious party who, if we had not gone to Abu Dhabi, we would not be talking to," O'Connell told AUTOSPORT.

"It justifies what we have done.

"We were blown over by how successful an idea it was [to race], plus the enthusiasm it got.

"It achieved everything we wanted."

As well as boosting interest from buyers, Caterham's presence in Abu Dhabi has also made other teams more aware of its plight.

In both Abu Dhabi, and in last week's F1 Commission meeting in Geneva, rival teams indicated that they would not necessarily oppose the idea of the team running a 2014 car or engine if it would help it survive.

The prospect of not needing to design a bespoke 2015 car could hand Caterham valuable extra weeks to find a purchaser - with the team initially having laid down a pre-Christmas deadline to secure a buyer.

O'Connell said the support of rival teams had been welcome, as he sensed there was a wider desire to see Caterham survive.

"The support in the paddock is absolutely phenomenal," said O'Connell, with Caterham only racing in Abu Dhabi thanks to support from partners including Red Bull, Renault and Pirelli.

"They have really supported us, and they have a vested interest in us surviving. It's been amazing."

WEC: Webber remains in hospital for checks

Written By kolimtiga on Senin, 01 Desember 2014 | 11.06

By Gary Watkins Monday, December 1st 2014, 00:15 GMT

Mark Webber, Porsche, Interlagos WEC crash 2014

Mark Webber is receiving visitors in the Sao Paulo hospital where he has been taken for checks following his accident near the end of the Interlagos World Endurance Championship finale.

Porsche driver Webber and Matteo Cressoni, whose AF Corse-run Ferrari was involved in the incident, were described as being in a satisfactory condition by FIA medical delegate Dr Alain Chantegret.

Porsche LMP1 boss Fritz Enzinger was more forthcoming on Webber's condition.

"Mark is OK, but he has had to go to hospital for further checks," he told AUTOSPORT.

"We have spoken to him and said that people can go and see him, so Timo [Bernhard] and Brendon [Hartley, Webber's team-mates] have gone to the hospital."

Enzinger said it was unclear whether Webber would be kept in the Bandeirantes hospital for further investigation.

Porsche has yet to ascertain the reasons for the accident, which happened at the fast Turn 14 left-hander that leads onto the start-finish straight.

Porsche LMP1 technical director Alex Hitzinger said: "We don't know yet what happened because there is not much footage of the accident.

"We cannot say anything until we analyse the car and the data."

Cressoni, who was sharing the AF Corse-run 8Star Ferrari with Gianluca Roda and Paolo Ruberti, is reported to have told his team that he was hit by the Porsche only after Webber had lost control.

WEC: Porsche wins, big crash for Webber

By Gary Watkins Sunday, November 30th 2014, 21:27 GMT

Neel Jani, Porsche, wins Interlagos WEC 2014

Porsche claimed the first victory of its top-flight sportscar comeback at the Interlagos World Endurance Championship finale, while its second car was in a dramatic accident involving Mark Webber.

Neel Jani took the chequered flag to seal the victory for the #14 Porsche 919 Hybrid he shared with Marc Lieb and Romain Dumas behind the safety car after Webber's late crash.

Webber, who was running sixth at the time, lost control of the #20 Porsche at the flat-out Turn 14 left hander that leads into the start-finish straight and backed into the wall.

The accident happened with 26 minutes of the race to go, but the time taken to extract Webber from the car and clear up the wreckage of a shunt that also involved the AF Corse Ferrari driven by Matteo Cressoni meant there was no time for a restart.

Webber, who was able to talk to his team on the radio immediately after the accident, was taken to the circuit medical centre for evaluation.

NEWS UPDATE: Webber undergoes further checks in hospital

Jani held a lead of 14.8 seconds ahead of the chasing Toyota TS040 HYBRID driven by Anthony Davidson when the yellow flags were brought out.

The race had been set for a grandstand finish after Porsche opted not to change tyres when Jani made his final pitstop with 50 minutes to go, whereas Toyota gave Davidson a fresh set of Michelins when he stopped 10 minutes later.

Davidson, who shared the #8 Toyota with fellow world champion Sebastien Buemi, reduced the gap from 17s to just over 13s before Jani stabilised it at around 14s prior to the safety car being deployed.

Jani said: "I was part of the first pole for Porsche on its comeback and now the first win, so I am very proud — this is what I was dreaming of when I joined."

He was confident that he would have been able to win the race had not the safety car been called.

"It was looking OK," he added, "when I was in free air I could do good times."

Nine-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Tom Kristensen finished his career with a podium aboard the #1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro he shared with Lucas di Grassi and Loic Duval.

He came under pressure from Stephane Sarrazin in the second Toyota, shared with Alex Wurz and Mike Conway, before re-extending his lead to over three seconds when the safety car came out.

Fifth place behind the Toyota went to the second Audi of Benoit Treluyer, Andre Lotterer and Marcel Fassler, which lost more than 40s on the opening lap after an electrical glitch that followed a tap from an LMP2 car.

Second and fourth places for Toyota were more than enough to secure the LMP1 manufacturers' title.

KCMG WINS LMP2, BUT ZLOBIN IS CHAMPION

The KCMG squad claimed its third LMP2 victory of the season with its ORECA-Nissan 03R shared by Alex Imperatori, Matt Howson and Richard Bradley.

The Chinese entry ended up 18 laps ahead of the second-placed SMP Racing ORECA in which Sergey Zlobin claimed the LMP2 drivers' crown.

SMP ORECA-Nissan, Interlagos WEC 2014

The SMP car, which Zlobin shared with Nicolas Minassian and Maurizio Mediani, only had to finish the race after the championship leading G-Drive Ligier crashed out of the race in the second hour.

Olivier Pla, who was co-driving as usual with Roman Rusinov and Julien Canal, suffered what the team has so far only described as a mechanical problem into the first corner.

Pla lost the Nissan-powered on the brakes for the Senna S and with the right front wheel folded back, he was unable to bring the car back to the pits.

GTE DOUBLE FOR ASTON

Aston Martin duo Stefan Mucke and Darren Turner won GTE Pro from the Porsche of Patrick Pilet and Frederic Makowiecki, the safety car allowing them to forego a late splash-and-dash fuel stop.

Aston also finished one-two in GTE Am. Pedro Lamy, Christoffer Nygaard and Paul Dalla Lana came home a lap ahead of the sister car of Nicki Thiim, Kristian Poulsen and David Heinemeier Hansson, which was delayed by a stop-go penalty and a puncture.

WRC: Loeb dominates on rallying return

Monday, December 1st 2014, 00:34 GMT

Sebastien Loeb wins Rally of Var 2014

Sebastien Loeb began his rallying comeback with a commanding win on French event the Rally of Var, with wife Severine co-driving.

The nine-time World Rally champion turned World Touring Car Championship frontrunner announced his Var participation two months before the news of his WRC comeback on the 2015 Monte Carlo Rally emerged.

Var is a popular test event for the Monte, and Loeb led from start to finish in his Citroen DS3 WRC in often very wet conditions.

He ultimately won by over three minutes from David Salanon's Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

French Tarmac champion and WRC regular Julien Maurin was the only man able to stay near Loeb, before he crashed out on the final morning when half a minute down.

Loeb will test the DS3 again before the Monte, which will be his first WRC appearance since what had been ostensibly his farewell rally in France last October.

He finished third in the WTCC in his first season of prioritising circuit racing, behind factory Citroen team-mates Jose Maria Lopez and Yvan Muller.
